I used extrudeline.rb to extrude the curve and then JPP to thicken it. I could probably have used follow-me with a section of the stair rail and this would be needed for a shaped banister. (Of course, I also first scaled the image using the dimensions on the plan).

Unfortunately Honeycomber uses some pro-only API methods to subtract solids. You could try OSCoolean Boolean http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=112055#p112055 - which works on free. You will need to make a set of smaller solid shapes arranged in a 3d matrix [to form the 'holes'], ensuring that none of them stick through the surface of the original or leave a very thin outer shell - and then subtract those in turn from the original solid [the Outliner might help with these selections ?]. It's more work, but it will do it... There are also some free suitable 'Shell' tools that will 'hollow-out' a solid - look for those in the Plugins Index...

Call me a cynic but, the problem is not just google sketchup developers. Just about every company out there will take the wishes of their marketing department/group over users EVERY day of the week. One direction in which software is developed, just not for the better of the (should be) major interest group (users).

Well, integrated intel chipsets are well known as notoriously not fully supporting OpenGL although these (most) modern ones are said to be better than the first series. I would recommend to try to find an update for your video driver and test with HW acceleration turned back on. Are you sure there is no other card in the system? Some laptops are manufactured with a built in chipset as well as a dedicated card and the user has to define which application should use which video card.

There are three things I can think of (if there is really no Z-fighting due to overlapping faces in SU): there are also group/component materials in the model. They should be deleted and materials only applied to the faces. there are different materials applied on back faces. They should also be deleted and the model exported (under the collada export options) without double sided materials. I forget the third but also make sure that your faces are oriented correctly (i.e. no back faces showing in monochrome mode).

Thanks a lot for the fast replies, I just went to model info-statistics-purge unused. From 263 materials that I had, now I have only 11 I just can't figure out why I haven't thought about it. You guys rock, thanks.

The solution for my problem was reinstalling the Driver again and then use the customized installation, here i was able to activate the sketchup drivers.

Chris, I am splitting the model up into smaller pieces now and it works much better. Still learning. The code TIG gave me works great.

If you have ill-advisedly set 'X' OR '*' as a shortcut then typing x10 or *10 will jump out of the copying and go to the X-tool or *-tool. The alternative is therefore to type 10x because if its at the end the X is still taken as part of the array command... Of course after the first copy is made, then you must press <enter> after typing the number+x otherwise how is the tool to know when you have finished typing...

@tig said: I think 3dText uses ttf only ??? Hmmm. I'll look into that. Not great, since we are environmental graphic designers and pretty particular about fonts and own a ton of PS fonts... thanks for the advice!

@abdsinc said: ...wow I feel kinda embarrassed. Thank you Dave, I kept hitting enter or tab to set the shortcut like you said. It's funny how something so obvious was completely unclear at the time. Thanks, You're welcome. I did it a couple of times while setting shortcuts early on with my Mac so I have first hand knowledge of the issue. It's not as intuitive as on the PC.
