Use several Scene tabs to remember views, layers, shadows and styles etc. When modeling use one with a simple style - with no fancy edge effects, no textures, no shadows, no fog etc and with any layers containing unneeded entourage set 'off'. You can also have a tab for 'troubleshooting' showing hidden geometry, in Monochrome mode etc. You can have style that keep the current camera, so toggling between two tabs needn't change the view, just the rendering settings, visible layers etc... Have other scenes set up for your actual 'presentation', using fancy edge detailing, full texturing, shadows, fog, entourage layers 'on' etc... When you have a SKP set up that suits your needs then save a version of it [with its entities deleted etc] as the 'default Template'. That way you always have the same set up when you open a new SKP. You will also need to remove unwanted/unused components from the Browser [delete individual ones, or purge_all if you want to keep none], also unwanted scene-tabs, layers, materials and styles can be removed from the Template before the final save: you can have a Template [or even several Templates!] with your own customized preset scene-tabs[with view/shadows/etc], layer-sets, styles, materials and components; even if they are unused initially...

Thanks for that! Yes your second method is valuable for this sort of simple "straight object" But maybe not with more organic object With this a normal Boolean Difference should be used or your first manual method [image: eclatemoteur.jpg]

Thanks for the advice. I probably stated what I want to do wrong, I just finished creating my great room to scale, which is in a "old library" style (it has a zillion trim pieces on the walls and getting them all to fit took me a few months, but I learned a lot. I now want to put our furniture in (I am trying to show my husband that a desk will not fit or look right) but I don't want stick furniture. I want our chairs and sectional to have the correct curves and the cushions to be rounded. So, now what plugins do I need and where can I find them. Thanks again, Sandy Yurk

The technique of entering n/m works only because SketchUp's measurements box accepts fractions, not because it implements a divide operator as such. In a fraction both n and m must be integers. Any other type does not get treated as a numerator or denominator of a fraction.

Just found this post. Had same problem and had trouble finding a solution. Here is my documentation on it: IN SKETCHUP -- Use a script to Paint faces of model with materials based on their layer. If you need to work with materials in SketchUp, then do the following to materialize faces based on layer designation: Download -- layers_materials.rb -- (Script By: Didier Bur) to paint faces with layer color: Layers Materials: http://rhin.crai.archi.fr/rld/plugin_details.php?id=219 IMPORTANT! After loading script, you must first run “CREATE MATERIALS FROM LAYERS” Then, run “PAINT FACES FROM LAYERS” Full description here: http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=18%26amp;t=65107

Thanks. I understand. Someone on here kindly and generously gave me a long online tutorial on geometry vs components and now I fully understand the many things I was not understanding properly. You have been a help too. All my questions (so far) are answered. Thanks.

Thank you both for providing some more insight into this. The sample I had provided was to merely show on a very basic level the idea I was trying to find an answer to. My model is actually very different than this but Alan I appreciate you spending the time to show the process you would follow to build out a box. I guess I was approaching the model similar to actually building the box in real life. Each side piece front and back piece are their own components as well as the bottom and the top. What I wanted to do from there was cut the box as I would with a band saw to ensure a good seam between the bottom (container) and the top (lid), not thinking at the time that it would be difficult to achieve in SketchUp. I will likely back pedal to my components and adjust at that point to construct the full lid as opposed to the piece of wood placed across the top.
