Those many lines are the way sketchup has to convert CAD splines into sketchup curves with high accuracy. You probably don't need that much accuracty for terrain contours.

Hello NicBelcher83 - Good questions. a) Yes, you can probably do all your 3D modelling in Sketchup, especially if you make fairly standard architectural forms. Sketchup is indeed very good at this. If, however, you often need smooth organic surfaces, double curving surfaces, and high precision when constructing and combining them, Rhino is a better choice. You make most forms in Sketchup as well. But you will not have the same precision and control of smooth surfaces, if you need them. Sketchup is primarily targeted for small to medium-sized models, quick volume studies and visualisations. Since Sketchup is a mesh modeler and not nurbs or sub-D, in practice you must use the final detail level already from the start. You cannot work on visual proxys and automatically have their geometry remeshed to a finer version later on, like you can in other modelling paradigms. This means that mesh modelers like Sketchup are especially reliant on their ability to handle large amounts of geometry - a very fast geometry kernel. The Trimble development team, however, appears to remain happily unencumbered by this fact. The Trimble development team most likely does not in earnest battle test their Sketchup software on heavy-duty models with tens and tens of millions of polygons, hundreds of layers, thousands of materials, and so on. You group 50 K edges - no problem. You group 500 K edges - go get a coffee, or two, or more. Sketchup's slowness when it comes to heavy geometry and heavy-duty work is a serious caveat emptor. Handled well, however, Sketchup can do a lot for you, including creating advanced forms and handling complex geometry - if you learn to tread carefully. b) Use the Sketchup plugin as far at it can take you. Only then use Maxwell studio. The reason is that the studio version breaks the live link with your model. After that point, you have to manually and individually propagate any change in the 3D model to your Maxwell scene. This quickly becomes unbearable. But if you are sure your model is finished, Maxwell Studio will give you greater control and is preferabe as such. One notable deficiency in Sketchup is that its native UV mapping is so limited as to be virtually nonexistant. But in Maxwell Studio, you can at least do some basic editing of your UVs, which you cannot in do in the Maxwell plugin the last time I tried it. I hope that answers your questions. Maxwell for Sketchup is able to produce visually extremely good results. The problem is not with the core functionality of the software, which I find satisfying at least in terms of rendered results. The problem is that Nextlimit appears to be having serious development problems. The Maxwell updates are few and far between, old problems persist, the UI does not work on 4K screens, they have lately released versions with features that are so unfinished that they should never have shipped (such as graphics card rendering, which simply disregard many common material settings). Worst of all, Nexlimit appears to be uninterested in their users. Nextlimit's Maxwell forum is one of the worst ones out there. In contrast to most successful forums, the official Maxwell forum does not accept presale questions (buy a license or we will not allow you to engage with forum members), it does not clearly distinguish Nextlimit staff from users, it was down for a month earlier this year (unbelievable), it was recently remade but did not employ the clearly superior Discourse platform, and so on and so forth. I really like the Maxwell philosophy of scientifically simulating the physical world. Maxwell on cpu still yields visually excellent results. The people in charge at Nextlimit, however, apparently have a somewhat limited understanding of how good customer relations work, how good forums work, how good software development works and how company transparency works. Those things really matter. They matter because the choice of render engine implies that you will invest months or years in learning and working with it. Something at the Nextlimit management needs to change. I'm sad to say this, because I want Maxwell to remain one of the top rendering solutions. Extrapolating today into the future, I would go elsewhere.

I'm one of those people that try to push sketchup beyond what is meant to, but what I found when doing that, is Sketchup is able to stretch and I gain productivity. I ditched away CAD in exchange for SU and there is more people doing that each year. I believe that Sketchup will adjust in time and be even more competent for that. Revit is what it is, it's much more than Sketchup for certain architectural businesses, but Sketchup is fit for 90% of the other scenarios. What I like about Sketchup is that it isn't as streamlined as Revit and so allows for a multidisciplinar approach and a very flexible workflow that I couldn't find with Revit. I have quit using Revit long ago and adopted Sketchup instead. I didn't fully use Revit, but it seemed to me a standard architectural software that somehow forced us to work in a standard way. I don't know how Revit evolved since then but Sketchup, even limited as an Architectural software, allows for creative freedom. The downside is that it forces us to find convoluted methods to get standard output done. Even so, I rather keep using Sketchup as I cherish that design freedom. I find advantage on that freedom even in the latest stages of design and construction documentation. It's probably because of that that I also don't use your plugins Meedek. I admire your work but cannot think in standards nor work always on similar contexts. Your plugins represent standards so I have no great use for them, hence I thought Revit was fit for them. However, as you see with Plusspec, Sketchup is useful for people that deal with standards too. The problem with plusspec might be about Layout then, as it isn't yet as capable as Revit for documentation standard output.

I suppose that you say Vray for SketchUp ... ? It's maybe not the same price! ( * 6-7 ) I am not sure it makes seven times better images ? Vray is not known for its facility of use...

Thanks for the comments. When I selected the "end" of the 1400mm rod and moved it to the new location it worked. Not sure why all of a sudden it worked but I will take it.

Might be worth trying to update/reinstall your graphics driver as TIG hinted? I experience the same symptoms if i revert to my iGPU [intel hd4000 on a i7 3770k] AND Win10 has done an update. As a short term solution using the intel driver assistant to manually reinstall the Intel driver has always got things working again for me and is easier than uninstalling the microsoft update. I'm not too concerned as i only use the iGPU occasionally when I want to continue working and my discrete GPUs are rendering. If the above is relevant, and you have a desktop, then a discrete GPU might be worth considering?

@cuttingedge said: I was refering to Max files (from CG axis, evermotion etc) full scenes being converted to sketchup... Many of those are pirated, but it's rare that you see something that can't be done in SUp. I think we don't see many examples because a lot of people are happy to buy, download and import whatever they need. It does take a lot of dedication to model complex items in SUp, so it's sort of understandable.

@annanikolson said: Hi guys. I'm new to the forum, but I already have a little experience with sketchup. My question is probably more practical. Will it be convenient to use sketchup in the development of 3D models for a 3D printer? I recently bought it, and now I have a question - should I continue working in sketchup or master some new program like 3dsmax. I just read several articles about 3D printers, about their device, about nozzles, filaments and much more. But I don't have a clear understanding if I can continue working in sketchup normally, or will it be a "pain"? I have been 3D printing already 3 years and I am using pretty much only Sketchup for modeling the 3D printed parts. Sketchup works really well if you plan to print functional parts. In some cases I have been using some other 3D modeling software but this has been mainly when I have downloaded some parts from Thingiverse and I have needed to make some modifications.

What is the future for Sketchup? Will Sketchup 2018 be the last desktop based software only to be replaced by a web based software like Sketchup Free? How will this affect Sketchup Pro versions or will the Pro version also be web based. I find web based apps to be fraught with many issues including application crashes; memory hungry web browsers; data limits for those without a DSL connection including people of lesser financial means to sustain a cloud based connection without eating into data limits. How will this affect extension development and will extension developed for Sketchup Free work with versions at or below Sketchup 2018. Generally speaking I'm sure Sketchup 2018 should have at least another 3 years of life in it. Many people are in fact still using Sketchup 8.
