to answer my own question in a topic now locked......tap the ctrl key when you stretch the tape measure across a group or component to avoid having to erase the guideline that remains after you resize.

Yeah, ok, it does have it's quirks. But not as bad as having to hunt them down individually like before.

I know that this is from earlier in the year, but I had the exact same problem and it is definitely a 'Driver Issue!' The machine had been inherited from someone else who had 'Played' with the Display Settings. It was very annoying, and almost impossible to detect the cause of the problem. Many suggested an 'Incompatible Video Card' and Insufficient Memory, etc. However, the problem was quite fundamental, and easily fixed. In my case the Drivers were up-to-date however, the machine had been configured to use a 16 Bit Colour Configuration on a Windows 7 Ultimate 32 Bit Machine! - This will give rise to 'Screen Bugs' such as the 'Grey Box' on Label Text. It will also create Large Blocks of 'Emptyness' when exporting an image from SketchUP to JPEG. To correct the problem, carry out the following. Download the Latest Drivers for your Video Card. This can appear quite daunting, as in my case the Download was 380 MB and the Install Process quite ponderous! However, it is worthwhile doing, as many 'Bugs' and Technical Issues have been overcome. Once the Drivers have been updated go to Control Panel> Video Card Configuration> Manage 3D Programme Settings> Programme Settings> ADD> If SketchUP is not on the list of Programmes, then it needs to be added - Go to ADD and you will select SketchUP.EXE by following the Path in Programme Files. ALTERNATIVELY Some Video Cards will have their own Separate Programme accessed from Desktop> Windows Button> All Programmes Next 'Quit' from the Video Card Configuration and go to Control Panel> Display> Screen Resolution> Monitor> Colours Be sure to select a 32 Bit Configuration! Apply the settings and 'Quit' from the Control Panel. Reboot your Machine. When you open SketchUP on the Default Drawing, go to Window> Preferences> Open GL> and Tick the Hardware Acceleration and Fast Response Boxes. Now try applying Label Text to the SketchUP Drawing Character (Bryce or Lizanne) - The 'Grey Box' should be gone! NOTE Video Card Configuration> This will be the name of the Video Card Manufacturer (In my case NVIDIA)

Answering my own problem here. It seems that Sketchucation tools is the culprit. I transferred the version I was using with SU 2016 and used it alongside the plugins that the Trimble extension manager had installed. Having removed the SU Tools extension, memory requirements dropped dramatically to something reasonable. Doing a bit of research, I found SU tools v. 3.1.3 but could not get them to install in SU2017 Pro 17.3.116 - I unzipped the rbz and put them in the plugins folder then relaunched SO but to no avail. It seems that Trimble are determined that one should use their extensions manager.

Is it a SketchUp problem or a Thea problem? Fog? Select all and paste into a new (blank) template file to see what happens.

FYI: After my network re-config. I tried to reinstall and authorize SU. It kept saying invalid licence. Finally got this from Trimble: "The user might be having an issue with the formatting in their email program (like outlook) changing the dash to a "bash" which looks the same, (my emphasis,) but SketchUp doesn't recognize it. Try typing it in vs copy/paste. Also, try pasting the whole license into the Advanced window." Might have saved me a few hours of frustration if this info was to appear on the licensing t/shoot page

Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed reply! It's a real shame Sketchup hasn't fixed this error in years, but good to know I've got a workaround I can use for the moment

@quadse7en said: this is the errors i get. i right clicked to install with same result. im on a lenovo desktop windows 10 intel core i3. attached is a screenshot of the errors. i dont know how to get opengl at least for my computer or which one i need. the main reason i am doing the update to 17 is for the joint pushpull and round corners by fredo6 If you have installed SketchUp using 'Run as administrator' and are still getting this issue then your Graphics Card is suspect. To find your GC details... Open Control Panel > Device Manager Find the 'Display adapters' entry and expand it. Your GC details should be shown. Right-click on that entry and select 'Update Driver Software...' When prompted let Windows search the www for the latest driver. SketchUp v2017 needs OpenGLv3.0 or higher - most now offer 4.0. Some GCs are known to be robust [e.g. most Nvidias], a few are flaky [some Intel/Radeon] and need therefore special attention... If updating the GC's driver doesn't improve things, then post the full details of the GC so we can see if anyone has a fix... Incidentally I think most of Fredo's extensions work in v2015 ?

@sjotcher said: I would also like to reply to your point about the Create Component dialog. I know that in this dialog for example, you can choose on which plane you would like to glue the component, including the layer it needs to be in. Funny thing is due to my work around, I never see this dialog. So for me it would be nice to have the dialog pop-up when I convert a group to component. Thanks for the help, I'm gonna try to find a solution! Sjotcher As for the Create Component window opening you you can give it a name and set the axes and gluing attribute, that does happen in SU2017. The alternative to get that window in earlier versions is to explode the group and then immediately make a component.

This looks like it may be a VRAY related problem. Uninstall VRAY from SU and see if this resolves the problem.

@autarchos said: I will try to reinstall SU2017 as admin, but fairly certain that isn't the issue... the same thing happens on my personal computer as well where I only have an admin account. You missed a very important part of my reply to you. @unknownuser said: Being the system admin is not the same so you would still need to use Run as administrator. Being the administrator for your computer IS NOT THE SAME. You need to use Run as administrator from the menu after you right click on the installer. See this. What do you get if you send the scene to LayOut and export a PDF from there?

This sort of behavior is typically related to the graphics card and its drivers and isn't a SketchUp bug. This is especially the case when the behavior changes after a period of use. SketchUp 2017 requires graphics cards that are up to handling OpenGL and handling it well. There's no offloading the graphics card's work to the CPU as in older versions. With Windows, the user can try to update the graphics drivers from the card's maker. With Mac it's not usually possible to do that. The graphics drivers are part of OS updates that Apple pushes with some frequency.

I can replicate it. With a radius ~1" the segments should be long enough to exist, do it fails. So the in-built 1/1000" issue should not kick in as the segments are considerably longer than that. Making it say ~2", then it does not present the issue at all... [image: iRIb_Capture.PNG]

TIG, Thank you. I don't remember ever hearing about that. Although moving away from the edge, intersecting and moving the result back to the edge leaves segments that, if deleted, deletes the whole brown filling of the plane! After deleting them and redrawing the right edge in two parts ending with the circle segment restores the fill with the hole breaking the edge, BUT, the hole in the center is filled in and not clickable for deletion. Mission sort of accomplished. [image: chiD_hole3.PNG] [image: 3av4_hole4.PNG] [image: rY36_hole5.PNG]
