Crash creating component or open In-model comp. lib.
-
Hi!
I was wondering if anyone is familiar with this bug I'm having that causes Sketch-Up to crash. Each time I decide to make a component (right-click geometry - Make Component) 9/10 times it causes SU to crash into an unending loading screen, forcing me to close down the application. The Create Component task window doesn't even get the chance to pop up.
However! If I decide to make a group (right-click geometry - Make Group), and I then right-click this newly made group to Make Component, the crash doesn't occur. Of course by doing this step, the Create Component window does not pop up, which is common. I just rename the newly made component in the Entity Info tab. It's rather annoying I have to use this work-around 2 step solution to properly make a component.
I would also like to say the crash does not seem to apply to the Make Unique option. In my opinion this is not strange, since all SU does, is adding #1 to the existing component name.
The crash also occurs 9/10 times when I click the In-model component library in the Component tab. SU gets again stuck into and unending loading screen, again forcing me to shut it down. As well an annoying bug that limits my workflow.
I am using Sketch-Up Pro 2016 now, but I've had the problem in SU14 as well.I really hope someone who has had the same problem is able to help me.
Best regards,
Sjotcher

I've had the same but making it a group and then a component still crashes. Using Sketchup 2017.

In SU2017, the Create Component window does open when you choose to make a component from a group.
This problem sounds like it might be the work of an extension or several extensions clashing. Try disabling all of your extensions and see if the behavior continues. If it doesn't, start adding them back a few at a time and see if anything changes.

Same here and same goes with my other colleagues using Sketchup 2017- Any fix yet? I feel so frustrated, 2017 runs a bit fast/light compared to older versions but this component creation is just super duper PITA, especially on big project- if not crash/hang, it will make me wait for like 2 hours even if just making a simple shape component . Well, It doesn't crash if you have only Sam on the scene LOL.. But put it in a bigger context and you're doomed. And why the heck the dialogue screen needs to open? Trimble guys-please fix this bug.
Not so with my Pro 2015 version (I still have), I simply right-click a group choose make component on list and done automatically converted to component! I have that in my keyboard shortcut- super quick.
I don't use dialogue box often, not unless if I want to activate Camera face me feature and other uncommon details..blah blah. But in usual workflow, it is more fluid if they will just revert it to bypass component dialogue screen mode.
Thanks!

I've not had any problems with component creation in SU2017 although I've seen a few other reports. Makes me wonder what is different about my installation and the others. I still wonder if it's somehow related to an extension that only some users have. It could also be related to the graphics card and its drivers. We see many crashes reported that are caused by the graphics drivers. With SU2017 the graphics drivers are more important than with earlier versions. If you had GPU-related problems with earlier SU versions, you could just turn off Hardware Acceleration and make the CPU do that work. That's no longer possible.
Funny thing about that Create Component dialog when converting a group to a component. Many users filed feature requests to make that dialog open when converting. I don't generally care because i don't create groups to convert anyway. But overall it seems like a good feature. At least you get a reminder and an easy way to give the component a name. Otherwise you wind up with a bunch of components called Group.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the reply! I do use a lot of extensions, and I will try to see if perhaps one of them is causing the problem. For one I don't think that it's a GPU or Graphics Driver related problem. I got a new pc, with a very good graphics card including memory. By the way, as I mentioned in my first post, I'm using SU 2016 pro, and I had the same problem with SU 2014. I would also like to reply to your point about the Create Component dialog. I know that in this dialog for example, you can choose on which plane you would like to glue the component, including the layer it needs to be in. Funny thing is due to my work around, I never see this dialog. So for me it would be nice to have the dialog pop-up when I convert a group to component.
Thanks for the help, I'm gonna try to find a solution!

As for the Create Component window opening you you can give it a name and set the axes and gluing attribute, that does happen in SU2017. The alternative to get that window in earlier versions is to explode the group and then immediately make a component.
