Post the model you have and ask a couple questions to show where you are having trouble.

@massimo said: Never apply textures to an entire group/component at once. Open the group-->apply the texture to a face-->rotate it-->pick the paint bucket tool-->alt+click on the face with the texture-->paint the adiacent face-->alt+click on that face and pick the adiacent face and so on. Well, I did some more testing and this time I got the eye dropper to work so I did not have to use the alt+click methond (which BTW worked). I created my box. Applied the texture and then rotated it. Once again, after rotating I used the eye dropper to click on the rotated texture. I then just clicked on an additional face and it applied the rotated texture. I also tried a second time by doing the first 2 steps, then just selected the entire box (did not make it a group) and when I used the paint bucket while the entire box was selected, it applied the rotated texture to all sides........ Makes me wonder what I did the first time that the eye dropper method did not work........ I really appreciate the feed back from you and cotty......

Hi Kico, hi folks. If you don't want to physically delete the geometry but simply hide it from the view, you can use a Section Plane. A Section Plane, like any other object, can be moved and rotated. Click in sequence on the scenes tabs of this SU file for ideas. Angled Section Plane.skp

@jeff hammond said: @slbaumgartner said: In this specific case the reason I view it is a bug is that a routine "intersect with" finds all of the missing edges quite readily. It seems like follow me quit while there was geometry remaining that it does know how to handle. idk, even if follow-me worked accurately, it would still fail in this circumstance.. it's being fed bad data in the first place because noName is trying to tell it to revolve a profile around a radius which is smaller than the profile itself.. there isn't a solution for that other than some of the corner being smooth and some of it being kinked.. bascially noName, you should followme the edge except for these two tight corners then construct the corners manually or separately using something like curviloft for the blend. ahh, yes that is one way I will try. Thanks for all the help.

You could use 2D Tools line style tool to locate the edges. Those won't get erased. However you have to keep them grouped separately if you want to keep them from interacting with geometry and be able to hide them eventually. So really any line can be used.It would be nice if you could use the line style tool to differentiate the lines from your model lines. Edit. Basically what Dave says, a group and layer that is for layout lines-- and a scene if needed.

Some faces are not 'flat' or 'coplanar'. So they are intersecting with other faces. Switch the view to Xray mode to see what I mean. If you expect this to happen [but I think NOT!] and want edges at show at those intersections, then select a face ad right-click context-menu intersect... Model all geometry on 'Layer0' [always have that set as the active layer] To keep the modeling neat and tidy make groups of related geometry. That way grouped parts don't 'stick together' and you can even assign a new layer to them, which you can switch off, controlling visibility and making working with multi-level projects much easier...

@djh said: @slbaumgartner said: Your picture suggests that you have nested groups. Have you enabled receive shadows on all the levels of nesting? A nested object will not receive shadows if its containing group does not. Sorry, I don't know what nesting is. All objects are on Layer0. I exploded all of the objects, but the shadows still don't appear on the objects. As Dave has pointed out, it is possible that the file is corrupted. The following is meant to be tutorial, in reply to your statement that you don't know what nesting is, since if you don't understand that concept it is still possible it is the cause of your issue. For example, if you don't get the idea, "exploded all of the objects" might actually have left something intact. "Nesting" is when you place or create a Group or ComponentInstance inside another Group or ComponentInstance. In your "still doesn't receive shadows" jpg, I see two different bounding boxes surrounding the selected Face, one around the corner panels and one around the rectangular group of corners (a room?). Due to the style I am not certain whether the panel on which the Face lies is also a Group. So, there could potentially be a Face nested in a panel Group nested in a corner Group nested in a room Group. The importance in this particular case is that the settings on containers and the things they contain interact. Specifically, shadows won't be cast on the Face unless the flag is set correctly on each of those levels of nesting. [edited to change "layers" to levels in the last sentence - poor choice of words since "layers" are a different thing]

@box said: Here's a quick one for aligning a component that is off on more than one axis. And then exploding two components to make one. The two off screen menu selections are, Explode, then Make Component. [image: Rotate%20and%20combine.gif] Ahh, thank you, that's a lot more clear. slbaumgartner, I will post the sketchup file with future problems. Thanks for help. Much appreciated.

@ntxdave said: Sorry to keep coming back but are you saying that Sketchy Physics creates the animated gif file? Not exactly, Sketchy creates the animation within sketchup and I have simply used a screen recorder to capture it. I think the plugin has a way of exporting the animation, but I've not gone into that and I may be wrong. I know it does save animations that you can view from any angle though. Having looked further I see you can export the animation as PNG, JPG or SKP frames. @ntxdave said: Another "learning" question: How do you achieve the indented curve look of your spiral blade? I have never had to do anything like this but when I learn tricks like that from you guys it helps me get a better overall grip of the tool. There are quite a few ways, everyone has their favourite, screw was mentioned a few posts back, curviloft will do it, some of tig's tools etc etc This is one way, Eneroth makes some fantastic plugins but is very quiet about them, better known on the Extension warehouse I think. This is done using her Upright Extruder. [image: Up.gif]

You can unlock and hide the Google Map grab. Then create your own map in it's place and the model will retain the geolocation.

a guess without seeing the .skp... the group isn't hidden.. the geometry inside the group is hidden.. when using 'unhide all', it will only affect the hidden geometry in the current level. click on the group in outliner.. edit the group via the Edit menu.. then unhide.

You won't find anywhere a list with these therms because some of them are not even in the dictionary . They came out of necessity. Usually I just google the words or have a search on the forums. If I can't find anything about it, I just ask. That is what I will continue to do.........just threw it out as a suggestion. Be prepared for me to pounce !!

Thank you. I'll do my research about doing what you suggest. No worries about terminology, it's a necessary evil, and learning the meaning of these terms will prove useful in the long run. And nevertheless, i appreciate all of you for your time responding.

Really the only way to control line width in exported raster images is to change the export size. The smaller the exported image, the thicker the lines will appear. You can adjust profile edge weight in Styles but that only deals with some of the edges. You might play with the Straight Line styles and see if they provide you with something use can use. The alternative would be to spring for the Pro version so you can export vector lines and adjust their weight in some other application or go through LayOut. Hi Martin, hi folks. If you observe the text that SketchUp (SU) is showing in the status bar, to the left of the dimension window, you will read, immediately after you select the From Scratch Tool: Select the first corner of the Sandbox or input the grid spacing of the Sandbox. SU is constantly trying to help with these messages when selecting and when executing the different steps of any operation. Just ideas.

I had sent this to sketchup and after a lot of convincing I was not looking for modeling strategies he tried the specific set of steps I suggested and was able to replicate it and "sent it up to engineering" I have not heard anything since.
