Basically it's quite a lot of work. Anybody got a less convoluted idea?

Thanks there oceanembers.. yep that's exactly what Im looking for- to UV map and add AO map...My dream is one day be able to do all this within sketchup. Yes indeed it's a lot of work...coz I got a whole lot of vintage furniture to do..

    • How to perfectly map this chair?

I have downloaded a real nice vintage chair but wonder how I could map it with this material that looks like bronze with all the dark spots in the recessed areas.

    • RE: Wish list for Sketchup 2018

Most of my wishes are repeated every year. and i repeat again:

      1. MULTIPLE VIEWPORT
      • every serious modeler (at least for most 3d platform) use multi-viewport. It is a feature that is essential to most 3d package . Hopefully we get an extra window that can be assigned left, right, top etc.
      1. QUADs
I hope there's a quad-mode feature that can be turned on that will prevent triangulation when modifying quad geometries. I hope to really be able to work in quads without any complication.

      2. More solid all-in-one UVW, UNWRAPPING & TEXTURE BAKING solution all within SU.

Still has great flaws but I have not seen anything easier and better.

Couldnt agree more Steve. I decided to shift and abandon Sketchup for its "lack of robustness" in handling complicated models way too many times. But the ease of use factor and the countless good things that is added every single day kept me coming back.

Thank goodness , very sloooow, but making great progress... I still see a promising future for SU as the user base grows tremendously.. It may not be "the one and only" 3d software you'll ever need, but it is becoming more and more indispensable in many 3d production workflow.

    • RE: Messed-up mapping on two sided material

      @majid said:

I am also passionate to see what would be the solution...

Ive seen it done in leaves for trees, I wonder how they kept the placement accurate.

I think Vray should consider applying some translucency to a material without having to make it into 2 sided material - or maybe that is an option I have not tackled..

    • Messed-up mapping on two sided material

I find it really really hard to use two sided material on surfaces with mapped texture. Often I lose the map or the map placement is messed up or out of scale. Since there is no preview in the model, I cant tell how it will come out in render.

One example is a leaf, or a flower petal. I like to make it a bit translucent to make it more natural.

Does anybody have a solution on this..?

    • RE: Vray Noisy Rendering

There are useful tutorial on lighting up a scene.. The basic ones are from Chaos group itself. I suggest you take time to go through it.
Put a rectangular light (portal) on the window. Never use emmisive layer as a source of light, use rectangular light or IES from lighting fixture... Your render is grainy because there's not much light in your scene.. but not too bad for somebody who's just starting... vray 3.4 is much simplified than the previous.Another way to learn is to download a render ready scene, then you can study how it works...πŸ˜„

I so love the 3d print.. how the texture came out is amazng ..Are the colors there right of the 3d print or is it repainted manually.. What kind of printer will give me this detailed output? Very well done...

    • RE: [Plugin][$] Vertex Tools

hI Thomthom, Is it possible to lock some vertices so that when Im trying to deform or add creases to a surface, some vertices will stay in place..say the outer edges?.

I hope this simple illustration could help you understand my point

with some vetices being locked, i can use soft selection to kind of inflate , deflate or sculpt the surface without messing up the outer edges, which is in line with the other edges of the other group...

    • Intrigued by pop up books and cards..

I find pop up books and cards amazing. There something magical in this kind of craft. In this time of advanced digital technology, anything that is not electronic could amuse us in a whole unique way.

I just wonder if there's a plug-in that could be made in SU that could help us engineer these kind of stuff. Im thinking Sketchyphysics dedicated to movements of folding , tensions and things like that...

Currently there is a software called Pop-up card designer... but Im so comfortable working in SU for anything... Just hoping here, surely I can make too many tech-sick people happy...

    • RE: How fast can you model a project in sketchup

Mostly depends on how much time you would allow yourself to finish a project. Few of us would model everything (as in everything) and not use ready made downloadable models. I would sometime try to model a sofa for 6 hours and stumbled upon a sofa in the warehouse more detailed and more beautiful that would take me 6 seconds to download..

One has to have his own properly organized library of frequently used components, materials etc. That would surely cut the modeling time.

How fast? I'd say faster than anything I can model in any other software like 3dsmax or Rhino. After say 5 years of doing similar projects, you can have a good guess of how long one project will take you.

    • RE: My furniture

ginchius , I really like your models, they are so neatly done. It appears in your models that you like to use artisan (with tris) than Subd (with quads). Do you find it more practical to use tris than quads in SU at least for upholstered furniture?
