• RE: Wrap-R for SketchUp

Hi Rich, This will be a real valuable tool! Maybe not 1 percent of SU users have an idea how this can bring their visualization skill to the next level. Not really very used to unwrapping myself but ive been searching for this kind of tool.

Just wondering how you did this (see below). I didn't follow (you must be using keyboard shortcuts in the demo)

Maybe a bit more videos and i'll be learning it soon.

Wow those are incredible set of tools Pilou. One cool tool is the swift loop which I was trying to request from THomthom for next QFT release. Just wondering if these TGI tools are supporting quads..

• Is there a way to disable auto-heal?

In the simplest task of doing subdivision modeling, I find myself having trouble with discontinuing loops because when loops cut through a coplanar, It tend to auto heal after a while therefore breaking the loops, sometime this cause also the model to break.

I hope there's a way to disable auto heal and auto make-face.

JPP - would this be different from Fredo's JPP in any way?
(I really need to fix a number of issues with my current custom PP tool)

Proper thickening tool is required while keeping the quads. I find Fredo's JPP not working well-gives me undesirable result.

Thom thom, I really like in the future to be able to edit inside SubD mode, so you get a realtime feedback of your shape.. if possible for your QFT and VT to work inside Subd. that will be best! so we never have to toggle SubD on and off and guess.

If youre not too particular about quads (most people dont bother really) Artisan is so good for most
organic modeling. I hope developments would still pursue. I like particularly the sculpting tool , the paint brush and the select brush. some features i wish to see coming in SubD.

• RE: 3D models

Theres the Sketchup texture site. Its not a full repository of Models like the SU warehouse but they pretty much have most the things you need.

Its not all about texture but they sure have a lot of textures and maps.

They have free models (mostly good quality) and full scenes (bathroom, full houses, offices , etc) Most of these are render ready if you are using vray.

site is :

• This will be flying in Dubai skies this April (WIP)

This will fly Dubai Skies this summer.

I probably wont give it a try. Reason: 1. Only good for one passenger (nobody to share the adventure) 2.Battery last for half an hour! (you kidding me!!)

I just took the challenge of building this in 3d from available photographs. Its barely massing for now, its not even finished. No door, the front and back details aren’t done.

There isn’t enough reference (such as blueprints) for me to go too detailed and not enough geekiness in me.I just wanted to try how good Thomthom’s VT-SubD-QFT are in doing projects like this. And its very well capable. Still learning it with the help of the experts of this community.

• RE: Trouble keeping the quads "at all times"

Revisited my 3dmax and saw how quick these kind of modeling challenges are. (which I use to do)
Problem is I belong to the SU cult and I don't wanna do things in 3ds max anymore.
maxrty2.png
Its faster there because of:

1.The ability to modify in nurms mode gives you realtime preview (add loops, extrude, etc)

2.The ability to manipulate each selected faces all at same time (do extrude , bevel etc) skip the need to do one section and array.

3.Swiftloop is so so good.. hope this comes to QFT soon.

I still like to work in SU and still finding my way how to do it quickly there.

• Vray 3 beta quality issues

ive been using vray 2.0 for everyday work for years. We have it on 3 computers. I have downloaded vray 3.0 beta on a spare computer to try it out. Quite honestly, I have not produced a decent render. I often go back to my computer having the 2.0 to do final renders.

its good that it has fast parsing times and all. I just don't understand why even the default render gives me a poor quality. then it don't change much even when set at high quality.

I understand this is beta. but I would at least expect with everything properly set on my v2 would give me same (or better) when run on a v3.

Presets are also one of the things I miss in v3. (interior , exterior, high q, med q etc)

what could I be missing

• RE: Version 2 is out!

Thanks for this update thomthom. Im having more fun playing with quads. I was just wondering if you would consider including in future releases:

-Joint push pull (now that you have push pull)
-relax tool (may come inside vertex tool though)
-chamfer tool (may come inside QFT)

but hey, really thanks for making SU more fun and more functional.

Adding vertical loops only distorts the form outline if the loops are not evenly spaced.

Horizontal loops won't affect the form unless you place near angular change in the mesh.

You were on the right track though.

Thanks for the info.

By the way Rich, did you use varying crease values?
I also assumed that you made 1 section and polar arrayed it? Is that right?

Side note: from that screenshot - I think you can get away with less faces.

(Just realized you are modelling a quad-copter with quads šŸ˜„ #quad-ception!)

Thanks for that prompt answer from the great author himself. I normally start with less face- that's always the way to go... I just took into account that I have to make the insets (20 of them) .. That's actually the part Im confused about.

Do I make offsets and "divide donuts" or do I let the edges of the inset make a loop all the way. In both cases I failed to make it work.

• RE: Sketchup model didn't render

It may have something to do with materials. Try to remove materials (Thomthoms material tool) See to it that the faces are not reversed. then reapply material. If that wont work, explode and regroup... still if doesn't show, model it yourself, should take you a few minutes. I always had trouble with downloaded 3d warehouse blocks.

• Trouble keeping the quads "at all times"

I am trying to model a drone shown below. Somehow I thought these was the easy part but its not(im 90 percent done with the body) . I knew with native tools , these are very very basic(with no quads) but keeping the quads could sometimes be a challenge to my level of modeling skill.Appreciate anyone could help.

@pixero said:

I usually do it like this.
In Max make sure the materials are scan line not vray.
Export as obj to the same folder that the textures are in.
I then use Simlab composer to convert the obj to skp.
I think you can export a few models with the demo version.

or direct export from max to skp via Simlab exporter for MAX . So far, that one worked seamlessly.
