    • Vray Next license...

      Hello,

We have 6 licenses for Vray for sketchup 3.6.03 and it works great how we can use the swarm feature utilizing the power of the 6 processors together.

If I would buy 1 VRAY next license, will I be able to use the swarm feature to utilize the 6 other that are having the 3.6 licenses.

Hope, it will as i havent considered upgrading all our licenses to Vray Next

      regards,

      edd

    • RE: 20 Reasons for SketchUp artists to consider Blender

Thanks there Chippwalters... I agree SU needs major rewriting if it wants to stay in the game..But If I want to shift to a more "serious modeling" tool and dive to that steep learning curve... Why not 3ds max or Maya? Has Blender overtaken the two as the industry standard.. I mean if I am to continually pursue a career in ArchViz?

    • RE: Will SketchUp Ever Wear Big Boy Pants?

We all hoped that SU will one day transition to a "can do" to a "do it all" software. While other pro CG artists can smile at what SU have achieved so far (credits to independent plugin writers).Being realistic about it, SU has achieved what other had about decades ago. Expecting them to jump over will be a move backwards. Many of my colleage still thinks Sketchup is a joke...and wont fit their standards.

And so we were excited about SubD and UV unwrap unveiled in the recent years which has been there 15 or 20 years ago in many 3d platforms..

SU will always be here for the ease of use. But I agree that major overhaul is needed. Having said all this.. I still love SU and would like to hear the future plans..

    • RE: Has SU improved handling High poly models?

did all those suggestions.. Strange that if I try to run cleanup , it gives me approximate hundreds of hours to process... πŸ˜„ the way to go was import as proxy in vray... I have a full floor to fill with chairs and stuffs.. I long for a day we can import clean unbroken models seamlessly... without taxing the memory..

    • Has SU improved handling High poly models?

I was just wondering what has sketchup done to improve handling of high poly models. I just needed 3 chairs imported from 3ds format which run ultra smoothly on other platforms.. Im using SKP 17 The 3 chairs alone is 50mb . This set of chairs freezes everything else.

      3 chairs for 50mb

Re-modelling it will take me a day or so to be as close. I guess re-topo is something developers out there can think of to keep a lot of SU users happy.

I have a strange behavior of displacement map in vray 3.6.
I cant make it to work. The material preview shows a good displacement but it doesnt appear in the render.Tried and tried but cant make it work.

      vray 3.6 displacement problem

Even I tried models done in vray 2.0 which worked but wont work in 3.6.

Anyone having the same issue? below is the displacement map

      ... thanks Cuttingedge!

just an other video link which seems to be very close to what you (we) are looking for πŸ˜‰

Thanks there Hornoxx.. Really useful.. I havent tried inkscape, Now for sure I will..

I also found a quick dedicated app for this purpose which is very easy to use.. its called halftoner from

http://jasondorie.com/page_cnc.html. This is mainly used for CNC pattern production which generates high res image or vector (dxf)

I was able to generate this image of my city's skyline..generated by Halftoner v1.7

This topic is so important for me as well, so please keep posting how you come along πŸ˜‰

      Sure i will...

I found one good site that makes halftone vectors of images.. I just dont see the triangular perforation pattern option.. and they come with watermark in the output...but works well...

      Link Preview Image
      Halftone Patterns

      Powerful Vector Halftone Image Generator

      favicon

      (halftonepro.com)

Once i got the image halftoned, then vectorization should be an easy job

BTW, I failed to mention the above is the famous DGJ+NAU’s bank building for Raiffeisen in Zurich...not my project...

    • Convert image to halftoned triangular perforation ??

Hi everyone, Im faced with a challenge of creating something like the image...
      halftone perforation on panel...

a halftone design on perforated panels...

Creating it in Sketchup should be very easy.. But making the vector from the image is a challenge..
I cant generate this vector from my image...

Ive tried looking for softwares that can do that but most that i tried cant do this exact thing.. Would truly appreciate if anyone can help...or suggest a solution...

This new Lumion release is just mind blowing. I havent tried Lumion ever but I've seen tutorials and seen how easy it works..

I'd love to know how seamlessly it works with sketchup models.

Have you checked out the SUbD examples thread recently?

Yes I have constantly...and yes they are impressive...

I was refering to Max files (from CG axis, evermotion etc) full scenes being converted to sketchup..
even cars, so detailed and good. i wonder if they are by any chance SU-created...

Im happy with these developments though...

    • Most good SU models I see these days are not made in SU

Sure sketchup came a long long way.. The user-base has spread like wild fir eall over the globe.
Plugins made are genious and made SU to a capable 3d platform for multiple disciplines.

But the resources I see these days which are tagged made in SU are
not modelled in SU but were just imported to SU..

When I see hi poly cars, beds with high-poly sheets, even human figures fully textured in place..
I kept wondering, when can we do that all inside sketchup?

Any new user, would be mistaken to believe this is all possible in SU
..yes probably but not without pain.

Im one user who likes to model everything (used to) but now ive learned to live with SU limitations and still loved it. SU still my platform of choice.

    • RE: SubD examples and models

its been my practice to subdivide, and yes exploding at times, quadifying autofolded faces (takes a long time dealing with the diagonals).. It can be a pain with complicated meshes 😞. .. Even with perfectly done quads can all of a sudden triagulate when you toggle subd.

I wish autofold can be totally disabled..and wish loops can be moved by dragging instead of adding and removing...

    • Vray for SU 2.0 and 3.4 comparative speed test?

Hello guys, My Office management wants me to give justification to upgrade from vray 2.0 to vray 3.4.

Unfortunately, I have to pay the full-amount for the upgrade of 3 licenses. Im looking for a comparative benchmark test to give a report of say, 30% or 50% speed in rendering, etc.. The people up there are not technical and so they want numbers that proves it's worth the upgrade.

I saw a youtube video that claims 3.0 is 1.5 up to 5 times faster, but i thought this was not for sketchup but for 3dsmax.

I hope some folks out there can give me comparative data on their own tests.
