There are a few ways to do this, I would draw the building separately temporarily making the 'basement' deeper than necessary, group it, then move it into position and Right click -> "Intersect with model". To MaryonSketchup: From the picture you provided, it looks as if for some reason the edges of that rectangle are not on the same plane as the rest of the flat face. These edges may be "microscopically" separated from that plane, and I do not believe even using Intersect Selected will change that. So apparently you have a faceless rectangle, which may even be slightly twisted. Try drawing a diagonal in the rectangle. Of course, I may be missing something in the information. You could also upload a copy of your file in much the same way as the image. Only meant to assist. mitcorb

I've never thought about doing the racing surface as a seperate component. I think I'll try that aproach for road courses now.

Well, as it turns out, a friend managed to put together a Sketchup file that can export an animation of a model spinning in 36 frames. Using styles I've been able to mimic render quality. It's not perfect, but good enough for my purposes. Thanks for your help!

I meant to be clear that I think I understand well the scene manger's utility for storing all manner of settings, including axes, and for updating all or any one of them in bulk or individually. What I meant by a user being able to set a default custom axes is that one could set it and it would remain that way until manually changed (including through scenes). Fiddling with scenes would then not be required at all even if one's desired axes differed from SU's geo driven default. 'Multiple defaults' may be a poorly coined phrase, maybe stickily-definable is marginally better?? Anyway, I hope you understand me but I don't want to waste any more of anyone's time on this, even if I can't get any measure of concurrence, out of anyone. I'll be alright.**

Peter A test scene would be interesting, but would probably have to be developed with a specific test in mind, or contain layers that could be turned on progressively as the test goes on. In my experience, shadows, poly count and scale are the things that can cause difficulty. I always have the shadows off or at least have created a scene where they are on that I can reference to. Poly count, that's hard especially when something like trees and other vegetation of any quality are part of the model, I guess just good layer management. By scale I mean, if the area being modeled is large problems can occur, but usually that is more clipping than slowdown. Anything that I can learn that serves a better work flow I am interested in.
