This is fantastic. To help other googling sketchup users: painting rotation from one texture to another copying texture properties copy texture position

I worked on the 'quarter' form. I un-smoothed/un-hid all edges in it. Then it's easier to fix. I tweaked the Style to have a distinctive back-face color [bright-blue]. I started by trying to tidy it up by moving vertices + Alt... BUT I found it easier to erase most of the really messy bits - lots of short edges etc. For example - I erased the 'radial spokes' on the corner and exploded the two top curves so that I could see the vertices. There were too many vertices so I then drew in new edges from the bottom common point to alternate vertices in the top 'curve'; I then erased the edges of the top 'curve' and drew in new edges between the ends of the 'spokes' - these faced. I also dis some adjustments to the 'prow' end of the 'keel' to get a simpler but equivalent faced form. Once I was happy I copied the group [Move+Ctrl] and used Scale -1 to mirror them as need; snapped the together grouped the four and exploded them together. A check for 'water-tightness' proved OK so I use my Volume by Integration tool to find its volume - I did 0.5% accuracy which took ten times longer than 5% accuracy BUT in sqm the result was the same any way!

One more flattening technique that works if you have SU Pro: Export a 2D DWG (from plan view, parallel projection, full scale) and re-import. Anssi

@roger said: AA stands for Architects Anonymous an organization for embarrassed designers clever enough to get an architectural degree, but not clever enough to know the difference between SketchUp and ketchup. They generally form secret groups where each gets up an confesses his sins. Unfortunately a few go rogue and attack the mother of all modelers. I too have been guilty of this when it comes to buying stuff I know little about. If it cost more it must be better. Sigh......when will I learn???? If I have a saving grace, it's that I am cheap:-) Unless it's my client's money. Just joking.

Hi Jeff! Thanks for the reply! I realized this as I started mucking about with the rubies - I guess I'll have to patch the rubies myself to fix this! Thanks for the heads up though! // Olle

@dedmin said: Yes, You can convert a line to different curves using BezierSpline - http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=13563#p100509 But please, if You are so in a hurry to master SketchUp just use a search function in the forum. I'm not in a hurry, it's just that i have two weeks to finish this project, and i'm only getting to terms with sketchup.

These are all 'original' caryatids as at the Acropolis... but any human [female] statue used as a column is a 'caryatid' too - if absolute accuracy isn't need find a 3d standing woman model and use that with modifications... There are several in the 3d-warehouse... http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=14e3023f03787b204a736b2733b8d89e&prevstart=0 http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=c29d12f4b7ca01818b14db3b83de9ff&prevstart=0 etc etc... Thank you so much for these.

@unknownuser said: So, you mean to start from a horizontal base and go up? Yup,Just trace over a hanging cloth picture and pull the geometry up,then divide a bit the surface and play with the lines a bit,can t be that hard. @unknownuser said: Sorry, I don't have much experience (and intuition - which is developed by experience, after all ) in modelling organic stuff. It's my first cloth modeling too, although is not actually a cloth is more like a messy mesh and a texture applied to it,but is good for visualization because is so poly less and looks pretty real(it s not good enough for the main object in a render though).

Let's see if this helps explain it. First, you are absolutely correct that the begining and end segments of the path need to be at 90° to each other for a 1/4 sector and for Follow Me to work correctly. Instead of adding line segments to your 90° arc, though try the following. [image: 5190512797_5e0876427d.jpg] In this image, I've added red lines over the line segments at 90° to each other. Notice these are half the length of the other line segments. Instead of drawing an arc for the Follow Me profile, draw a circle and make sure you drag it out on axis. Then rotate the circle on its center by half the angle between vertices. In the case of a default 24-segment circle, that would be 7.5°. This will set sides parallel to the axis lines. Divide the circle into quarters or as I did eighths and discard all but one of those. Now you have your path for Follow Me set up correctly. The end segments are at 90° to each other and when you put two sectors together, they meet on a line rather than at a point. the other benefit of this is that when you hide seam lines, they are actually hidden. If the seam line occurs on the vertex of the circle, the edges won't hide nicely and softening then will do strange things to the appearance of the faces. It takes longer to read this than do it.

Steve, I took a quick look at LandFX's pages, and from what I understand, the SU to Acad and back via LandFX only works with the planting models that are in the LandFX libraries. If so, I can think of 2 ways to swap non LandFX library elements. One way is to build, and place the element into the LandFX library. The other is to use SU's import dwg or dxf files of that element directly from Acad as a block.

Dear Cosycat, Thank you for the links. The lastwelshmartyr.blog is very intersting. I watched the YouTube clip on Irena Sendler. Very moving. Charly, If you are interested in historic building reconstruction then you and Gaieus must have a lot in common. @mitcorb said: For me, reading as much of the forums as possible, whether seeking an answer to a problem or not, challenging myself with non business modeling projects, "going down blind alleys" and discovering the intricate behavior of the program has helped develop my methodology. It really does take some time in the trenches and soon these things will become second nature to you. Sometimes I come over here and just read and find out all kinds of helpful stuff I didn't realize that I didn't know. Does that makes sense?
