@sfto1 said: I searched thru the site for any info on accurately placing section planes, as opposed to eyeballing them, and I cannot find anything. Does anyone know if this is possible? Another method, general approach, to see where you are going with the section plane.... as a group: You can draw on a section plane, so: create a section plane and make it inactive (double click on it) draw two intersecting finit construction lines on the section plane (or one edge) select both construction lines (or the edge) and the section plane > make group. this group has a convenient grip, the intersection (or two endpoints) and can be placed, rotated etc. to fit in the geometry at the correct location/orientation. Best to do so in X-Ray. Right click the group > Explode > double click the section plane to make it active.

I've had another poke through the rest of your model and cleaned it up so it should make a nice cut list. You could compare the outliner in your copy of the file to this one. I fixed the issue with the braces by deleting one and replacing it with a copy of the other. I also corrected the reversed faces on the table top planks and, because the two outside and two second planks are identical, I replaced planks 4 and 5 with copies of planks 1 and 2. [image: lV4p_outdoortable.png] I didn't change any dimensions but you might want to do so on the legs anyway. [image: X5bJ_outdoortablecl.png] By the way, I have plugs set up to fall into the Parts section of the cut list so they don't show with the lumber. outdoor table.skp

A small point, but it might be a good idea to remove some of the information in the title box. Your clients might not be very happy to have their property identified in such detail, or am I just being paranoid! Kind regards, Bob

Hi folks. Be carefull with the triple click. If an object is enclosed inside another but doesn't touch it, a double click on the outer object will not select the inner one. The safest way is to use X-Ray mode to ascertain that all that you want to select has really be selected. In such cases, using a selection window is safer. Another trick I learned is that in some situations, with a really crowded model, it is nearly impossible, even with careful pan, zoom and orbit, to select exactly what you want. Some unwanted geometry always gets selected when you don't want it. The trick is not to loose time trying to beat the system. Select as well as you can and then deselect the few items that may have been accidently selected. Many times, it turned up to be the fastest way. Just ideas.

Hello, I just believe I needed a good night. You were right, pbacot, it was a layer issue. Problem solved! Thanks for your advises.

Your design is really good, design-wise (and subject to personal taste). And one thing is for sure, we all are looking forward to see refresh and modernization of some sorts. Interesting is how you realized the paradigms of the desktop (WIMP) with the design language of the Metro interface (that Microsoft originally targeted for different paradigms). Though there are some challenges, namely SketchUp is a multi-platform software and tries to use user interaction concepts that are shared by all supported (and future supported) operating systems. Symbolic or monochrome icons work well for a small repertoire of items but how do they work with huge amounts of icons (see John's studies)? Actually John's screenshot collection is a good point to start, what if we share mockups how we imagine SketchUp to become modern (again) and to develop in future? Maybe we have to raise the bar by creating attractive and convincing "images" to underline our list(s) of feature requests?

Hi mal, Your model is well organized. However, if you want the sub-components to keep their size when scaling then you need to add size constraints. The size constraints are built-in attributes named LenX, LenY and LenZ. You can assign a size using a constant number, or from another attribute. Examples might look like these: LenX: =0 LenY: =AnotherAttribute LenZ: =Parent!SomeAttribute

Trevor, I'm with you. I don't leave loose geometry in my models. Every edge and face will be in a component when I'm finished. I do sometimes intentionally draw loose geometry that is destined for inclusion in a component outside the component and then cut and paste it in place inside the component. Sometimes I do this to avoid potentially distorting the geometry already in the component and sometimes I do this when I want the same geometry is two or more neighboring components.

I take that back. It worked for a few seconds. I have now solved the problem. You were right TIG. I have the NoScript plugin installed. I had to instruct it to allow buysellads. Thanks again.

Sketchup Nube here. I am not using sketchup for 3D modeling, only slab footprint. Where would I need to input the code that TIG posted to allow for lineal footage addition? Please and thank you. Brandon Irby
