    BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

    Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

    Update. After getting some advice from Fredo6 I went back to the drawing board on this. I stared at the wall for a few hours thinking before I came up with a technique to take any sphere or ellipsoid cut it into panels and easily unfold it (shown below). I'm unfolding everything now and will lay it all out to make a sewing pattern. Thanks gang. [image: IhEO_SP32-20100909-163213.jpg]

    Guys, have you tried the DAE/Collada or FBX export options yet in SketchUp? I've been having really good results with SU and Unity using the above. I don't know if 3DS Max can handle Collada, but it would surprise me if it didn't.

    After a reboot to try to get Vista to stop telling me I needed V8 to open a file which had been saved with V8, and ignoring my repeated instructions in various places to open SU file with V8, my toolbars are docked where I last left them. SU windows (managers and such) remain uncontrollable.

    Yes, with a tree image the transparency is a feature, but if the image is person or solid object, then there's a problem. The lines in the distance show through that person when transparency is enabled. Or the background blocks the styles, if transparency is disabled. - Joel

    I have 2 systems. Both are WinXP, and have SU 7 and 8. One will animate, and the other crashes to the desktop as soon as the progress bar comes up. SU8WinCrash_090210_191609.zip

    Yes i mean 3d max connection extension included in v2011 but when importing it destroys the SU structure. It takes only into account the bottom level component in case of nested components. That is the big issue.
