BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

There is a plugin for import-export of UV maps from a number of UV tools (some of them free) ... and here it is http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=23725&hilit=plugin+uvtools

One of the easiest ways to make one is ...first build a straight ramp with the required slope then use Chris Fullmer's shape bender plugin to bend it along a path...

I would suggest using TIG's .obj importer plugin. Then make sure all materials are in the same folder as the .obj file. That might do the trick. I'm not sure what the .ppm file is though.

Keep in mind that SU arcs are imported into ACAD / Bricscad as a series of short straight lines & not arcs. Seasdes

@Brodie This is within the vray materials editor - things like reflection and emissive layers, etc. It would save time to be able to copy these layers from one material to another.

See this link for your chair http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=e0f16ba60e1deefe427d16763a0ff49. How it was done: Saved the Febo chair as an obj file( it has 5825 vertices and 11238 faces); Imported to Mesh lab( it will import 3ds also) and ran through filters: Merge close vertices ( d= .00010251) with 3 merged; removed duplicate faces with abuot 40 removed; Saved as dxf file and imported to DoubleCad free. Scaled by 10e6 in DoubleCad; Imported to SU 7.1 free with the result you see. I have not re-scaled yet. The reason with the step to Mesh lab is because it has a number of filters for clean up and decimation. I have not tried to reduce model size smaller than above. In addition I think Mesh lab is using a older version of dxf and wanted a later one for import to SU. Note the small artifacts at left/ right cushion back rest/ seat are in the basics model as well as the small ones on seat front edge. You can try different filters in Mesh lab to reduce model size to what you find acceptable. Good Luck

@gaieus said: No, this is not working. It's either not the same length or not at 45 degrees. I'll leave it to someone more knowledgeable. It's probably due to the Earth being round instead of flat. We could blame Christopher Columbus. He's not here to defend himself anyway.

Othoap, As a woodworker who drew by hand for more than 20 years, I can testify that what Chris Fuller say's is abosolutely dead on. "Stop thinking about shapes as primitives that must be manipulated through dialog windows and think about shapes as objects made up of lines, as if you were drawing them with a pencil. Its a bit of a mindset shift coming into SU from most other modelers." Sketchup was the first program I tried that drew the way is most natural to me. Is it perfect? No. But it's a super program that after using for 18 months I'm still learning new things every day. And I could not have done it without the help of the good folks on this forum. Always get quick and in my case patient walking through of whatever problem I've had. If you're using it professionally, become proficient at the basics before you run into a deadline, or you'll surly become dishearted at the program. The # of tutorials out there coupled with plugins make Sketchup a winner in my book.

IMO, there is little value with running your own app. in a browser. If however, an occasional user could access SU pro as a server app for pennies, then running SU Pro in a browser could be an attraction.

You have Piranesi which is a real "3D Photoshop" The link seems to be closed just now: http://www.piranesi.co.uk/ (hope it's only temporary ) so I send a You Tube link as example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cO2KKD5rJTo&feature=channel_page Fotosketcher is only for PC EDIT: Bad news: searching the Piranesi link to send it here, I found that Informatix editor of Piranesi has some real problems: http://www.informatixsoftware.com/forums/showthread.php/3122-Informatix-Inc.-Japan-Statement

Does the order of Ctrl and Shift in the Shortcuts window matter in practice? Along with the V they get played more like a three-note chord on a piano than playing the individual notes in succession.

Make that rectangle into a component which glues to "any" face (and cuts a hole, too, to avoid Z-fighting). Make sure to set the component axes so that the red and green axes are lying on the face. Now whenever you pull one from the component browser, it will try to self-align itself to any face you snap it to. You may still rotate the component on the face but that should not be an issue. See attached file. CompGlue.skp

That mesh looks really good. Even with a lot less guide points. And hey, you didn't even have to bang your head against the wall. Man, 400,000+ points. That makes my head hurt.

Don't do it. Google themselves even say so. Depending on the distance from the origin, and simply speaking, the accuracy of the lines themselves can actually become inaccurate due to the software running out of decimal points from the origin. It's not as bad in SketchUp but all programs suffer this and some tend to be better at it than others. I know that Maya is shocking at this when you have drawings kms away from the origin.
