Many thanks for all your suggestions, the more I use SU it seems as if jiggling is a key feature of using it When I run into seemingly insurmountable problems it does take some of the fun out of it so some ocassional assistance is crucial to my SU development. Many thanks. I got it sorted in the end by adjusting where I placed the rotation axis and then moving it into place. when I find the way to edit or cut sections off an imported model I will be one step further. - 'edit' Got it! right click on the selection and edit component. Now we're cooking with gas.. Such is life. Thanks for your help teepee

Or when you have bunch of back faces, you can select them all (Shift + select = toggle selecion, Ctrl + Select = add to selection, Shift + Ctrl + Select = Deselect) then right click on any of the selected faces and do the reverse operation per Remus' method above. If you have a neatly and cleanly made model and it's not too complex yet, right clicking on a front face and choosing "Orient faces" may work as well since it should turn all back faces to front faces. There are a lot of factors that influence this however and often unwanted results may occur.

I don't know if it will help or not but here is a tutorial I did a while back on creating a 2D "Face Me" tree. http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=680&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

Also, don't forget to update the scenes once you have layers turned on and off as desired. Chris

its a very complicated thing, and only really learnt through a lot of practice. This thread might be of interest, though: http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=2650 If you search the tutorials forum, there should also be some more specific tutorials in there.

@unknownuser said: This seems odd to me. An I.T dept should only be concerned with the running requirements of the proposed software. As a designer/architect/technician you shouldn't need to justify using SU to them, they should not be concerned with project delivery. "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that an IT man in possession of authority turns into a control freak." From experience... "What you need to do is install i-drop to work with AutoCAD. It's a free add-on from Autodesk." "We can't do that the IT manager won't approve it!" "Then he's a WCW!"

Then instead of positioning, select the "Projected" option instead.

Note that transparency on a skydome can be a very good thing. It allows you to adjust the look of the sky by simply adjusting SketchUp's own Sky or Background colour settings. It makes the skydome far more versatile. You might be able to brighten, darken, or even achieve sunset or night effects all with the same skydome. Regards, Ross

I don't know, ELYSIUM, my method is pretty tedious. While it's precise, it can take a lot of work. (My tutorial model was really an exercise to demonstrate the capability of SketchUp ... and somebody dared me!) For quick representation of a rope, I'd try the textured method suggested by remus. For quickly producing an actual twisted construction, I'd use the "Follow me rotate" plugin. See this discussion: http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=180&t=12965 So, Casey, now you've got several options! (...and we haven't even gotten into the catenary-sag issue, yet.) I'm afraid you might be right, but the User Manual for Vray for Sketchup said it would not show either at its source or in the object. I'll try to contact them, or keep working on it.

You can always ad more cameras in SU and export them to KT - with the "merge" function in KT you can even do this without needing to redo everything that you have done there. Don't ask meabout the merge function however because I only know aboutit but have never done it myself
