Ok Gaieus, thanks. I'm going to try it out and learn more about the component axis behaviour and possibility to "Change Axes".

Todd, "newbies" only need the basic directions and impetus at the beginning. After a few examples you will be able to discover "simple but efficient" solutions on your own.

You could create a template and use it as a watermark, although youd need to change it each time you printed. The other option is to export an image and import it in to a ready made layout in something like word. Would be pretty easy in layout...

Thanks a lot Jim, you'll have understood that I am a beginner with Sketchup. Have already tried your suggestion and solved the problem. I understand that Dynamic Component is supplied with the more professional Sketchup version and would make things easier. An incentive to purchase in the next future I hope. Bye Mario

Thanks very much for your help! SA

I had the same problem with fifthtexas and i used to do the workaround mentioned above. But since you are using AutoCAD i found a tool named Plex.Earth which provides an evaluation version to download. This will be commercially available in a few days but you can have the full functionality until then to do your work. I think that you have to see it to believe it: i couldn't imagine that i would do the work i used to spend days in just some hours. If you want to do the work using SU, the above procedure in SU PRO is the only affordable way. If you want to do the work inside AutoCAD take a look at Plex.Earth

That's exactly the proper and idealuse of components. Also,to a limited extent, you can make changes to certain instances without affecting the others. These include [list][]scaling []colouring [*]moving and rotating (i.e.positioning and ligning anywhere)[list] BUT in case you don't edit them just do these things "from outside" of the components.

There are two ways actually. One would be with background watermarks (you can add this under Window > Styles > In model> Edit tab > Watermark settings) or use a sky dome which is practically a big dome of modelle geometry and painted with a hemispherical sky.

Hi Chuck, Withnthe Shift key pressed, you can add/distract any entities to/from your selection so if you have a bunch of plants, use the Shift+Select to select them all then the Ctrl+Move to make copies. You should be able to fill in ares with the textures in the Material browser but first you need to enclose a specific face (to be painted) with edges. The odd mouse behaviour may be due to some harware/software problems. What video card do you have?

Hi John and welcome. As you do woodwork, I registered you in our Woodworking forum so that you can access it when logged in. Also, a "beginner's tip" (as you come from Autocad) if you allow me: don't expect layers in SU to separate your geometry; they merely control visibility and the geometry on different layers is still interactive with each other. Use groups or components to separate geometry instead.

@gaieus said: Todd, If you've messed your model up with layers and such, the best would be to upload it here so that we can have a look. It's extremely hard to "imagine" the logic of such a mess... Gaieus, thanks. No, as I noted in my original post, I'm pretty good about doing all of the primary modeling on "Layer 0". What confused me was why SketchUp didn't create edges where it seemed they should be -- as in when a door frame ends up sitting a little below the wall depth of what I'd designed. As I mentioned, I was (mistakenly) told to use the "intersect" command(s) to create some edges where I wanted them, but it seems that just manually editing the particular component and adding an edge at the right depth is the way to go. I may have had the stray "remnants" from using the intersect command show up in different groups, but I realize I wasn't properly editing the group (or component) in question when that happened. Again, thanks for all the help.

I think you would be a lot more successful if you added depth to the floors on both of the levels and made them components. On the second floor, you would be able to punch through for the stairwell by going into the floor component(double clicking to edit it), drawing in the shape of the opening, then push/pull through and voila, the opening is there and the rest of the floor remains intact. Add walls by drawing the lines onto the surface of the "closed" component floor and you can tweak them since they don't glue themselves to the floor like they do if the floor is not a component. By adding depth to the second story floor, you have an accurate total rise for the stairs if the depth corresponds to the thickness of the construction from the first floor ceiling to the actual floor on the second story. Even though you don't "need" a super accurate drawing for what ever your purpose is, the more accurate you make it, and the better procedures used will make the over all job much easier.

Hi Jon, I'm not sure it will help but try to check "Correct reverse picking driver bug" under Windows (Sketchup on Mac) > Preferences > OpenGL settings.

@voder vocoder said: Read about the Position Texture tool in the User's Guide. ~Voder Here: http://download.sketchup.com/sketchuphelp/gsu6_win/Content/D-Modification_Tools/ModTool-PositionTexture.htm right click the face (with the material in the wrong direction) go to Texture > Position Right click again and go to > Rotate... > choose the angle (I gues 90 degrees) Note that positioning a texture can only be performed on a single face; not on curved surfaces nor on groups/components (unless you turn on hidden geometry with surfaces or edit the groups/components). p.s. I merged your two posts (the one in the CMS forum with this one) about the same issue.

the only aspects of inferencing you can change/turn off are length and angle snapping. Length snapping snaps geometry to incremental units when you create it. Angle snapping snaps geometry to angular increments when you rotate it. Generally i find it easiest to turn length/angle snapping of and just type stuff in to the VCB when i need precision.
