And Shift+Erase will hide the lines. There is a significan difference between the two however; with hidden lines, the faces remain separate while with softening, they will be "joined" to form a (curved) surface. On faces divided with hidden lines only, you can still access texture positioning, PushPull and all the stuff that can only be applied on single faces while to do this on smoothed surfaces, you will always turn on hidden geometry first. (Very briefly...) The best would still be what both me and Anssi suggested; start over and care for all the faces being created of single faces where you need not hide/soften edges. Much easier to work with.

Yeah, it sure looked double faced because of the handle. But it was just an illusion. Chris

Unfortunately, I think you were right before; I don't think there's any way to set a default folder to save models. It just goes to the last folder you saved a model in, and we get a list of recent places. That's it. I could be wrong though, you never know.

Sketchup uses the default browser of your system; Internet Explorer on Windows and Safari on the Mac. You can set other (like Firefox) to be the default browser for Internet but not for Sketchup - so it will go on using the originaldefault browser. Anyway, this shouldn't prevent you from uploading a model provided you are logged in via SU as well. But when you try to upload something, it should tell you to log in (from SU) and when you have done so, it should let you upload the model. So either with the G button or on the upload page of SU, can you log in or is there a problem with logging in at all?

Hi Paul, What you are experiencing here is because the two arcs were different polylines. When these segments are not welded together into one, single polyline, when extruded to 3D, they will always leave these unsmoothed edge on the sides. You can try to draw a 24 segmented polygon, PushPull it into 3D and you will see the difference as opposed to a "real" circle. You can soften the edges with the Ctrl Eraser afterwards -like Chris suggests - and this is most often fine but sometimes, when you have more segments or want to perform more operations,it may be better to weld those lines/curves into one entity. This is what the plugin "Weld.rb" is good - and invaluable - for (I think most "old" users even forget it doesn't originally belong to SU).

@murkin said: ...But there is one other thing, how do you find the geometry that you don't need inside a small model after it is completed? Well, I rather try to do it "on the fly". When you create a profile on the edge of the guitar with the Follow me tool, you will know that there'as a face inside that you won't need. Delete it immediately. Or in this case, I just "opened" the guitar by removing its top face and found what I found inside. X-ray mode and unhiden geometry can also help finding these unnecessary pieces of geometry.

For the line disconnect.reconnect, generally you would just delete the line in the unwanted place and then re-draw it to the desired location. If that deletes a face that you don't want deleted, then that means you have to leave the line where it was because it is making the face. In that case, leave the line there and then just draw in a new one. The line style is controled in the "Styles" palette. Go to the menu Window>Styles and it should pop open a styles dialog box. In there go to "Edit" and then make sure you are on the edge settings (its the first of the small icons). And you can change a few of the edges settings there. You can also apply different styles of edges to the model by going out of the edit tab, back to the select tab. Click on the down arrow in the window and choose sketchy edges. Then click on any of the shown styles to apply it to the model. Then you can go back to edit and change some of the edge settings there. Hope that helps, Chris

I use SU animation in my work for next day presentations. If you have a PC, this is an example of a exterior study for a house, and later is an interior video for a small renovation. I had some flashing shadows (bug in SU code) in the interior video, but I cut the bad frames out for the final production. They are constructed by saving scenes, then exporting the animation. Use SU to see the sequence, but save at a minimum of 24 fps. Space the scenes to accomplish the desired transitions time from one to another (insert or delete scenes as necessary). Use 0 delay time between scenes, and duplicate scenes where you want a pause to occur. The animation is created in SU (unrendered) then the avi file is ported into WinMovieMaker for titles and editing. Nothing fancy, but does the job for me.

@atomik99 said: Question: does Sketchup work like vector programs? SketchUp ISa vector program so it should definitely behave as such. Another tip: there are templates in SU -if you are a ne user and installed SU recently, you had to choose a template at the beginning. Now keep in mind that you can always create your own templates - just modify a new file/model as you wish (this means all style settings, included components like Sang is included in some, even scenes, pre-made layers etc.) AND of course, views in the way how "big" scale you are working. A woodworker would obviously like to start a new model from much "closer" than a landscape architect for instance. When you have set up everything, you can save your model in File > Save as template and then choose this new template to start SU with every time you use it at Window (Skethup on Mac) > Preferences > Templates. Note that always work in "real scale" (1:1) except in very extremely small/large scales. Materials are (and new materials always should be) also "scaled" to real life.

Thanks, all. Strange - I kept going there but whenever I scrolled to the bottom all I would see is the following message in red: "[You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.]" It was right where the link should have been. But just now I tried it one last time and "voila" - there was the link instead of the above message. Anyway, I have it properly installed now and it seems to be working. Thanks again.

Hi Joaquin, You can also try here (the direct link to the download page): http://sketchup.google.com/gsu7/download.html I still believe it's some kind of a GPU issue but if you are sure you have an adequate card and up-to-date driver then you can try to reinstall it.

Hi Jeff and James, Thanks for your feedback. The YouTube segment is very helpful in that it shows the possibility of going back and changing the geometry with the scale tool. It is a pretty elaborate flying wing, and interesting to see it from start to finish. The segment on the wingtips is also very helpful, I will try out the soap bubble ruby. I had previously been to the PushPull site and downloaded most of the scripts there. I still do not know why 3DShapesTool does not persist after the last click. I have not found a tutorial on it. Jeff, your question about my skill level made me try and make a rounded cube. I am not sure how to send the attachment, but am sending it anyway. I need to read up on a bit more on the basic tools, especially using exact input in the VCB that did not seem to work for me. will keep at it. Many thanks for your feedback. Shahid Rounded_Cube.skp
