OMG it takes a message from 10 years ago to finally answer my question LOL. Been struggling with face me people spinning off the place I put them as the camera rotates. Trying to get someone to stay put on a sidewalk or sitting on a bench. Thanks SO much! This sorted it in 5 seconds work. @tig said: Choose a Front view. Select an instance and right-click context-menu 'Change Axes' - pick a new 'origin' [axes] for it [you'll need to Orbit for the green axis = green-axis]. It should now rotate around the new point. Ensure that the green axis is the right way so that it 'faces' you as expected...

Thx for the info! Dxf from SketchUp are specific because curves are polylines so numerous "control points" ! Maybe Circles and Arcs can be exported as real curves... With this one by Joergberg (for SU Make) So circles and arcs are not "segmented" ! [image: ELT3_dxf.jpg] As we can see for the circle...that is a true curve! [image: NQKu_dxf1.jpg]

Make sure the face orientation is correct. Blue back face toward the inside of the volume. Then soften the edges by clicking on them with the Eraser tool while holding Ctrl.

@gnome_mo said: Old topic but I hope somebody can help me. I ticked off foreground in styles, and it shows fine in skp. But when I render in vray, my model looks transparent (or it has foreground on, result is the same). Only thing I din in V.ray is put my background photo in background slot, placement type:place, UWV-Environment-screen. Bacground renders fine but why is foreground on? I was also wondering about that and then found out the solution myself while searching this forum. It is about Vray settings, not the SketchUp Styles. You need to go to Environment under the Vray Settings and turn the GI on. It worked for me. Hope it works for all of you out there too. Stay safe!

I use Ultimate Unwrap 3D to open them and export them to SU. I use it for UV unwrapping and this part is a plus for me, also you could use Blender to open ti and export it to obj.

There are a couple of options for doing this. One version would be to use Zorro 2 to cut through in one go and then I'd use Fixit 101 to repair the missing faces. The components will all become unique, note I grouped them to contain the cut within the group, otherwise it will slice through your whole model. I has three goes at showing the context menu for Fixit correctly, so ignore the extra clicking. [image: toAFYCL.gif]

This actually solves the problem! Thanks! @mvollrath said: I realize this is an old post but I figured out a work around to this issue and wanted to share if people are still encountering this problem. In Max select all the objects you want to export, go to Utilities > Reset Xform > Reset Transform > Reset Selected Then Export Selected and when you import your .3ds file into SketchUp everything should now be in the right place. I hope this helps! Cheers!

You're right Thrupaint is the only way to do this nicely. I go to it automatically sometimes, and I forget.

@pbacot said: Based on the approach you have begun, I would try SoapSkinBubble and Curviloft to make skins between your edges. The boundaries have to be enclosed, and divided into smaller, hopefully logical sections. Being sure your edges are connected may be the hardest newbie part. This example is using SoapSkinBubble. I found that the circular part was not working with SSB and by grouping and checking the boundary edges separately I could make a clean closed loop. It may not be clear from the picture but I made raised areas with irregular slopes. The fountain is a component and the terrain just passes beneath it. (I added a wall with extrusion tools and joint push pull). I don't know why Sandbox isn't working for you. It works pretty well, though I prefer other methods for better geometry. I wouldn't think this is first newbie task I'd go with. You have an elaborate garden. Look here: https://learn.sketchup.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwp4j6BRCRARIsAGq4yMHuZ1ACbu0ZdW170kCHmiwckWXnAGYet3iVpuihOV7wQyd528dXaQ8aAkQYEALw_wcB. They even have a landscape module. I'd also look at toposhaper for filling in the areas between hardscape. That's a good idea. Thanks for your answer and the explanation. You are completely right, this probably shouldn't be among the first few tasks of a Sketchup newbie. What I am trying to find is a way to make Sketchup part of our landscaping workflow. That way the everyday process of gathering data on the field determines my line of thought -- unfortunately in a not so user and newbie friendly manner. I will try SoapSkinBubble next. And in the meantime will keep learning on Sketchup Campus.

Good deal. FWIW, TIG has written an extension that will parse through a model file and correct the tagging for all edges and faces back to Untagged. It's called Default Layer Geometry and despite the word Layer used in it, it does work in 2020 with tags as well.

The Ruby API only lets you set a layer/tag's color. [Note in v2020 'layers' were renamed 'tags', but in the API they're always called 'layers']. But you can't [yet] set a layer/tag's material [i.e. there's no access to textures or to transparency settings]. However, in Ruby you could set up a separate color for the transparent layer [but setting a alpha value does nothing] and when it's set you do a simple edit for the layer/tag's color in the Layer/Tag Browser, and NOW you can add some transparency... model=Sketchup.active_model model.start_operation("LayerColors",true) model.layers.each{|layer| if layer.name=="0_EX_Glazing" #grey to get transparency setting later on... layer.color=Sketchup;;Color.new(150,150,150,50) else # 0128_White ? Set up any RGB you want ! layer.color=Sketchup;;Color.new(255,255,255) end } model.commit_operation Ensure your Model is set up to use color by layer/tag - in the layer/tag-browser pop-out... Run this in the Ruby Console... Next manually edit the "0_EX_Glazing" layer/tag color in the layer/tag-browser to have some transparency... There's no option for 'back' material in layer's colors...

As DaveR says: @unknownuser said: Go to SketchUp menu item: Window > Extension Manager - click on Install Extension... Navigate to where you saved the RBZ file, select it and choose Open. It's then auto-installed for you... But I find you difficulty hard to understand... You say you understand you need a newer version of LibFredo [from a message?]. So you must have aversion already installed ? You must also have some of Fredo's Extensions installed to have got the message ?? So why do you have trouble installing the newer RBZ, when somehow earlier ones were installed ??

The more comfortable is using a remote system like Real VNC The best for use a mouse on your Android tablett with an USB / OTG / connector! (Right Click and Wheel are well emulated) Of course your computer must be opened with SketchUp! On a SmartPhone it's many less comfortable... The "free" version on a Browser must be working also on an Android Tablett! So no need mouse Else you have the free "SKetchUp Viewver" for Phone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwwAaFrkYvY

Refer to the System Requirements article here. In general you will need a computer with a suitable graphics card. Integrated GPUs have never been recommended and historically Nvidia GeForce and GTX series cards have been the best at supporting OpenGL. SketchUp only uses a single CPU core so multi-core CPUs don't add anything. Speed will be more important than number of cores. Many rendering programs can utilize more threads so if you plan to do that sort of thing, investigate their system requirements, too.

Kinda really depends on the model. Good model easily done.
