If you mean. is it possible to import a photograph of a person? Yes.Make a Rectangle for this purpose. Import the image-file as a Textured material and apply it to a front of the Rectangle If you further mean, can I cut out the "person's face" and make it a component? Yes. Zoom into the image and draw around the edges of the part[s] you want to keep with lines - try the freehand tool... Once you have a complete loop around the "person's face" use the Erase tool to remove the unwanted Edges around the rest of the Rectangle. Now you have the "person's face" as a 2d object using the image. You could give it some thickness using PushPull. Select it [x3-click] and use the Make Component tool... You now have a Component that is a person's face

After I found they wouldn't change, I kind of wondered why you hadn't asked about the materials. Anyone with pro could change the component to make scale handles work.

There are several helpful threads to help you understand how installing Plugins work - try this one http://sketchucation.com/resources/tutorials/37-beginner/108-installing-sketchup-plugins Please reread the Fredo's tool's/Lib download page and ensure that you are correctly making the footprint of the files/subfolders-of-files. You do NOT 'install' the folders formed by the UN-zipping process [which are usually named after the ZIP itself and are a temporary resting place for the contents, before you more everything 'intact' into the Plugins folder]... If you diverge from this it can break SketchUp... If you already have please tidy up the misplaced files etc first... I also see you are on a MAC... so please check you are using the correct 'plugins' folder ['HD' path NOT 'user']

This is a great example of how you sometimes need to turn your thinking to draw the thing you are after.

Why are you still using Google SketchUp? What error message are you getting? Since Joint Push/Pull does work with SketchUp 8, it sounds like you may have an installation error.

@gaieus said: Intersection only works in the editing context you are in. So if the top part is a group, you will need to explode it first (or edit the group to get that circle to appear inside the group). As for orbit and pan: you need a three button mouse where you can use the middle button (the wheel) to click with: that's the Orbit tool and if you also press Shift, that's the Pan tool. Once you release the middle mouse button, you'll get back to the tool (Rectangle, Move etc.) that you were using before clicking. Okay...totally makes sense. I think I got it. Also...the 3rd button was what I was missing...I wish there was a keyboard shorcut like in Photoshop, where I could just press and hold the space bar to enter pan mode and release to go back to the tool.

One other little tip to get just the edges, view/face style/wireframe, this way you can select all the edges and paint them in one go and not have to worry about the faces.

Update on using the Surface. Still hate their stupid commercials -among those that spoil what little TV I watch. Works great with the HDMI connection on large screen TV and monitor. Excellent companion to a small Epson projector I recently bought. All wireless operation makes it easy. Mouse works with the surface for good navigation. We have used the combination for several small Powerpoint presentations. Tomorrow will give it the first big test to promote a project at a Economic Development Board in nearby town. Will be projecting still renderings and animation. Hope it impresses the board.

The toolbars that you have 'active' when you close SketchUp should be the toolbars that are 'active' when you restart SketchUp. Is this not the case ?

Have you also correctly installed the separate required 'Lib' as explained on the tool's download/info page...?

And that is exactly why I export all of my renders as 2D images, as I do finish them up in Photoshop. For over five years I have done all of my visualizations in Photoshop alone, but the world moves on, and while I still use PS a lot for composities, the time has come to graduate to something more photo-realistic if that makes any sense to you. Compositing when the images sent to you were all taken at different angles can be quite a challenge as well. Puppet warp not withstanding. In addition, making the changes at the drop of a hat, because the client wants to see the room from a different angle is impossible without a 3D image to start out with. And should they want to see that, it would mean having to export the image again from SU at a different angle and then rework the lighting etc., once more in PS. Seems to me like a lot of extra work for no reason. See samples which are the original picture I was sent, and then what I was able to do with it in Photoshop alone. Also bear in mind, that while I would like to do something "pretty" my boss may not want it it to look just "pretty." He is actually quite fanatical about getting the lighting to look exactly as it will during the actual event. It is not like an architectural render where they can put it pretty flowering trees and shrubs that may never actually appear exactly like that once the building has been completed, but looked great in the render. Depending of the form of the containers! Better is use the primitives given by the program Sketchyphysics itself else the key is to fragmented the containers! For example the violet purple box above is fragmented in 5 ones: bottom, left, right, front, behind Static mesh is only for avoid containers volumes to fall

Notareal - Thanks for the 'current view' tip I will give it a try. I think I always set it back to scene 1 instead. Have you got any other tips for rendering animations that may help me as this is only my second one?

Incidentally, I have made two tutorials on components (windows) gluing to faces and cutting holes. A "simple" one: http://sketchucation.com/resources/tutorials/37-beginner/317-window-cut-oopening-on-face and a "more advanced" one: http://sketchucation.com/resources/tutorials/36-intermediate/321-window-cut-hole-thick-wall What TIG says: it's up to the component, more exactly its axes and origin whether it glues and cuts a hole properly. It should be an easy thing to modify your component to glue properly. You could also attach the component so that we can have a look.
