Well, Rich, I guess you could not see... Whenever a new member mentions something about woodworking (for instance), I regularly help him to the UG's myself - so thanks... And Troy - sorry for misspelling (or rather mistyping) your name above - I have corrected it now.

on the Microsoft Mouse 4000 (or other blue track mice) you need to set the wheel button to "middle click" and also use a top to front push on the wheel button to make it work in orbit mode. straight down or front to back push won't work reliably since the new devices are "game ready". once you get used to the new push action with your finger it all works as expected.

Hi ushumgal Hi everybody, @ushumgal said: Thanks for the links to the plugins, Simon...TIG's extrude edges by rails is amazing!! I'm having some success with it, but I do have a question. I divided the arrowhead into 3 segments (which all have somewhat different sections). When using this tool, how do you merge one segment into the next? Tig has is own explanation about that: Here But In fact it was very uneasy to skin the middle segment with EEBR for it was not possible to skin directly 4 joining curves. I said "IT WAS" because ExtrudeEdgesByRail V2 is out and this limitation has now expired Segmented arrow: [image: Arrow2nd_001_th.jpg] [image: Arrow2nd_002_th.jpg] [image: Arrow2nd_003_th.jpg] You can also use Soap Skin & Bubble Which add the possibility to inflate or depress the skined faces. The process need to be initiate with Weld operation for SS&B works with two joining curves. Some small fails may happen and need to be repaired. Something a bit difficult for newbies. [image: Arrow2nd_004_th.jpg] The two different skins: [image: Arrow2nd_005_th.jpg] .../ I see you are doing skins manually to join your curves (good thing). This can be made with plugins. Unfortunately, powerful ArchitectBoy's Skin.rb (& see also& skin thread) only skin separate curves, but Rick Wilson Curve Stitcher does it very simply (you can throw a glance on my little skin reminder here even if it must be updated) ++simon

Hi folks. On the Mac, there is no OK button. Just choose whatever template you want. If you want one that is not in the Template folder, use the "Browse" button to locate it. Once the template is choose, simply close the Preferences window. It is better to quite SU and then reopen it to have it use the newly selected template. Just ideas.

Hi Abdullah and welcome to SCF! Indeed, SketchUp is often underestimated although beautiful things can be done with it. As for the "job offer" - well, it depends. If you have anything to share with the community (like you can offer a job to anyone), please, feel free to post in the Corner Bar (down at the bottom of the Forum index). If you are seeking job, that's different. We used to have a "Job forum" but it soon became a blatant, advertising place so we shut it down. There is a SketchUp Jobs Google Group however... But nevertheless, it's definitely nice that you asked, thanks.

Hello and welcome! I couldn˙t help noticing that Roman Aqueduct model, largely due to the fact that the city of Split, that I was born in, still uses one of them, Diokletian´s aqueduct, AFAIK. Anyway, pardon me for being off topic - looking forward to seeing more of your work Cheers!

Now this is something! Contributing to some webcomic Looking good, indeed! Make sure to export larger images and resize them later. Or even (before exporting), change the back face colour in the Styles dialog to something dark (say black) so that those light stripes because of antialiasing won't be so apparent.

@don9of11 said: Is there anyway to add folders to the layers panel to group layers? No: BUT you can try to name your layers logically and they'll group when sorted by name [click the Layer Browser's pane bar above the layers' names]. I prefer to use AIA-like layer naming [4 characters, a dash, ad infinitum] as it is logical and makes you keep the layers' names "in line"... For example the first floor layers always start with 0001, those for the second floor 0002... Layers for Walls are WALL, Doors are DOOR, Roofs are ROOF, Furniture is FURN etc etc... So the layer containing the first floor's furniture is called 0001-FURN. The layer containing related text is 0001-FURN-TEXT... All of the first floor's layers stack together starting with 0001- My default skp template has all of these commonly used layer names already premade [and even precolored in 'type-sets'] so then I don't even need to think about what to call them - if I do need new layers then I can just follow the pattern already there: any layers that I don't want can be deleted or purged later... Remember that layers in SUp don't work like in CAD - turning them on/off only changes the visibility of thing on those layers - it does not separate geometry which remains connected to things that might be on layers then made invisible - so erasing a visible edge could cause a non-visible face that's on another layer to disappear unexpectedly ! Almost always* put 'raw geometry' on Layer0 and then place groups/componnet-instances of that on other layers to control their visibility [*only when doing clever tricks of animation etc should you break this layering rule - but that IS the exception...]

Chris, Thank you for the link, for the ruby script, and the advice. I applied your suggestions and that has solved my problem. I do recall it being mentioned that one should scale a model up significantly at times, but I never understood why. Now I do! Your script showed me right away where I had issues, and I was able to fix them easily and then use BoolTools successfully. Many thanks! Craig.

I agree Rick, but unfortunately, SU just does not tolerate models that are far from the origin. I use this trick to help though. In my CAD plan, I draw a triangle (or any object really), rather large, to the bottom left of my CAD model. And when I export things from my CAD file, I always use the wblock command. So I select all contours, AND my triangle, and then wblock it out to a separate file. Then I import that into SU, and I force it to ignore the model origin. What this does is it then lines up that object I drew on the SU origin. And everything I export from CAD from then on, I just export that trianlge shape alone with it and it wil always import right where I want it. Or if ever these is a problem, I always have that triangle that gets imported and I can then rotate and scale the new import so it fits perfectly with the existing. Sounds harder than it is and so far it has worked perfectly for me. And I think it might help with your bizarre linework. Chris

In SU, make a scene (View menu > animation > add scene) with your plan view without the section cut and another one for the elevation view with the section cut. Now in LO, in the tray > SU model > View tab, somewhere at the top right you can change which scene to display. You cannot access section planes and cuts from LO so all has to be set up in SU. When we get to the end of this, I may chop this topic into two and move this second part into the LayOut forum.

Hi ThorsonB, hi folks. If your objects have been modeled as components on the ground, they may be glued to the ground. Right click on any object and see if you have a choice labeled "Unglue" in the contextual menu. If so, choose it and now you shall be able to move the object up or down. Just ideas.

There is only one kind of inferencing you can turn off - length (and in fact, angle) snapping in Window > Model info > Units. No other inferencing can be turned off. BUT - we can often read this from beginners and believe me, if you really learn to use it, it will be your friend, not an enemy. Also, you would be completely lost without it in SU's virtual 3D space. Maybe it's only annoying with the freehand tool - but use some other application to draw freehand. I may have used that tool like three times over the past 3.5 years.
