Thanks Dave for the dimensions I redrew it using some of your suggestions and measurements. The file size is way down but I also didn't round any of the edges. I still think it looks ok for what its going to be used for. Thanks again for all your time and help!

humpmetwice, thanks for the tip about the videos, but I've downloaded and watched every video I could find about building cars in SU, some are helpful but for the most part they don't explain how they are doing what they are doing, they just seem to want to amaze people with their abilities. They frustrate more than they help, for the most part.

They inspire me, I look at it like this an artist can't tell you exactly how to paint a portrait but you can look at his work and get inspiration from it. Just as I look at the drawing you have so far and dream of the day that I might be able to accomplish the amount you have already, Plus I love old cars as well!

I bought a set of those hinges so I could measure and draw them accurately for a project I did. I can look and see if I still have them. We ended up not using them on that particular project but I still have the set of hinges. I think you've made the leaves a bit thin for the other dimensions. Otherwise it looks nice.

For my use, the file size is a bit large if the hinge is going to be used as part of a project. I would cut the file size down quite dramatically if I were drawing it.

Yeah I've been trying to work on the file size of my drawings but like you said they are still to big. I think its because I round the corners but not sure, any suggestions on making my drawings smaller is welcome. I also plan on ordering some of these hinges but not at the moment. I have to many other projects I have to get finished with first but if you could send the dimensions it would be great! I love to build an hour or two then draw and right now I'm building my first bed. The reason for the hinges is because I'm building a toy box for my great nephew and his mother wants these hinges for some reason. They seem a little expensive for a toy box but she likes them.

This is about the best I could do with this and all I had to go by was the picture in the model. I was wondering could anyone here give any advice on the process of making this nicer?

      Thanks Kurt

Being an old metal building detailer I would also love to see something like this developed but I think the variables would be endless. My best solution would be to create say a I-Beam column as a dynamic component with the variables you need it to have like size, pitch, plates, and things of that nature. I may be way off track on what you were talking about if so I'm sorry.

Thanks, I'm just now getting started on it and with my 16 years of 2D cad I'm afraid its not gona come that easy. But I am excited about the opportunity to be able to do it and will post when I'm done. It may be awhile though ha!

Whats the best way to turn something like this a 2D cad drawing into a usable 3D solid component? I'm sure all the SU masters out there have lots of tips and tricks that can be useful!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

      Thanks Kurt

Well spoken Solo and I also find myself in that position on what to buy but like you said I'm trying out alot of different ones! This one was done with V-ray, seems to be the easiest I've tried so far to work with but I still have alot of work and reading ahead!

Would help if you give an example of what you want to achieve and what operations u find hard to do .

Something like French Curves or "S" curves like the one shown in the first picture. I have trouble getting them smooth, they always seem bumpy or not a uniform transition from one point to the next. The example below is just a random pic from the web but it's shows what I have so much trouble with. I can randomly draw curves like these but when it comes to a drawing one with specific dimensions I run into issues!

I see all these amazing models here and was wondering are there any better tutorials on drawing curves? I have alot of problems drawing the simplest curves! As seen in the picture this simple little curve drove me crazy to get it like I wanted!

      Thanks Kurt

Its funny how some people can get so worked up over something as simple as a movie for one thing and second something like time travel thats impossible in the first place or at least to my knowledge it is. The same people ask me all the time over and over the same questions at work about how to calculate something as small as a column height but then can tell you the ends and outs of not yet invented time travel! FUNNY!

In the first Terminator movie John Connor sent back a man named Kyle Reese to save Sarah. Reese fell in love with Sarah while on his mission, and consequently became John's father! The question is who was John’s original father? It had to be someone else in order for John to be born, grow up and send Reese back in the first place right? One more thing why is his name John Connor and not John Reese?

This has nothing to do with SU but I figured there are some damn intelligent people here and thought what the hell. I say its not possible the movie is flawed but my coworkers will argue with you till they're blue in the face πŸ’š!

    • Trying to render with V-Ray

Hi everyone, I'm very new to rendering and I was wondering whats the best/easiest way to reader something like the first picture below? I really don't want anything in the model other than the model itself. I would like to be able to do something like the second picture below with the car in it but can't figure out how to add the image to the rendering. All the images I add are placed as the sky. I know there must be a lot that I'm missing and still have alot of reading to do. Is it possible to take a picture of say a room and take your SU model using the picture of the room and render them together to look as if the model is in the room?
