(And my try isn't even the first. And not the last. It seems searchable interfaces are en vogue.) I imagine that idea could do much more than just searching which plugin to start/load, but also for executing actions, maybe for "speeking" to SketchUp. Of course this would be better implemented on system-level(see below) or like Android's Majel or Apple's Siri. [flash 512,350:2u38h6cb]http://www.youtube.com/v/EHjEiTSHvqc?version=3&start=10[/flash:2u38h6cb] For now we are waiting for Trimble to fix/complete their API ( UI::Command.proc), this plugin is otherwise not possible without the risk of breaking your plugins. The UI::Command is a nice abstraction of a feature, it should contain as much metadata of a function as possible (icon, keywords, description), and then it can be easily accessible via menus/toolbars/webdialogs/voice/screen readers/keyboard search...

I just noticed that I don't even have to load a model. Sometimes it's enough that I just draw the first line, or move the camera a bit and it jams up again.

I probably wouldn't trust a generically created sketchup camera too much. If you were in ortho mode or 2 point perspective that could certainly throw things way off. Even if not, though, there's nothing native within SU to determine where the focus point should be. And even if you find a way to get a focus point, will that translate through a .3ds file? I don't know. SU's ACT camera plugin doesn't have an option for focal distance. I can set a focal distance with my Maxwell render plugin but it doesn't translate through .3ds. -Brodie Edit: I agree wholeheartedly with Earthmover. You should be using perspective to navigate. And 3ds Max's SU importer is quite nice. It preserves all of your components as 3ds Max instances and textures translate very well. There was a SU importer for 2010 but I think it had to be downloaded separately whereas it's integrated into 2011.

@aerilius said: I use three fingers for orbiting (and two fingers for zoom). That is because for me is three fingers = middle mouse button system-wide. If you can set it per-application, then try it. I'm curious if it proves useful I can't find anywhere on my system where to set three fingers to be set as a certain click... nor for two fingers. I've got the synaptic touchpad drivers... I might be able to it with additional software though... any suggestions?

Suggest you go to the Microsoft Download Center and make sure you have all updates for all VC runtimes installed. The manifest for Sketchup indicates it is linked against the MSVC version 8 runtime, (perhaps called 2005. After version 6, they began referring to them generally by the release year, as it made more sense to end users.) It should not hurt to install or update other runtimes on your machine (2008, 2010, etc.)

thanks for your suggestions. I lowered all texture resolutions to 4000x4000 (there was only one bigger than 2500) but this doesn't make a difference.

Bekhor, downloaded from: http://rhin.crai.archi.fr/RubyLibraryDepot/plugin_details.php?id=365 (I find this plugin one of the more powerful instance selection tools). I am trying to assign a keyboard shortcut, but I can't find the command in the shortcuts list. How can I do this? Is there something I'd need to update in the plugin to make it reachable in the shortcuts list? Thanks!! you probably have to select (something) prior to going into the shortcut list. ie- select what the script requires you to select prior to activating the script. Thanks! that worked! come to think of it, it's the same when you want to assign a shortcut for flipping along axis of components!

I'll be glad to test it! @jim said: It does sound cool, and it is certainly possible. What I am not sure about is whether it would be heavy and slow like copy & paste, or fast like the outliner. I'll write a prototype "insert into" tool if you don't mind testing it. -- On second thought, it would be simper to write a "Pull out of" tool for if it's for testing performance.
