I use Sketchup only. I use Revit & AutoCAD from time to time only to get some data from it. (I work as a modelmaker at an architectural office.) Our software packages are AutoCAD & Revit for the plan drawings and Sketchup for the illustrations. Our office is about 20+ people. With exception of me, all SU users are also AutoCAD users, with increasing number of Revit users. I didn't vote on the poll because I don't have much info to give such a large estimate. (From the poll in this thread it seemed you asked for what each person here thought about everyone else. But the one you posted a screenshot of from the other forum seems to be easier to answer as it asks what the users personally use.)

I think this varies in different places and in different industries. Here in yorkshire I know of a lot of small and large architectural firms that employ an autocad & SU (or revit and SU) workflow for major projects. It seems to me that now their aren't so many people in the architecture industry around here that dismiss Sketchup, but that's just one industry in the north of England. In the last few months I have had at least one experience with a designer from further afield whose project I modelled, his response, and I quote: "Er yeah, nice model but we wouldn't touch SU with a barge pole". The arrogant b****** then updated his website with stills from the SU model.

I decided I wanted to ask these question on some other forums as well - like AutoCAD and Revit Forums. So I have created an on-line survey with all the questions. Even if you have replied here already, please take the time to complete the on-line survey. On Line Survey The results will be posted from time to time on this Wiki Page

@remus said: not sure what an LWK is, could you expand a bit... 2)window->styles->edit->turn off profiles 3)The bes think to do here is make your own texture. the provided textures are pretty crap, really, and tend to tiles badly (i.e. they look bad when you use them for large areas.) If youve got photoshop this should be fairly simple, the main thing is to make sure there are no distinctive patterns that repeat. this goes for colour changes as well. once youve made your texture, you can import it in to SU by going file->import->'use image as material' LWK...sorry..Linework from CAD. I just imported it. Some of it was at the right elevations, but most, whoever did the original LWK did set it right and therefore I have LWK up and down and not really right at all. 2)window->styles->edit->turn off profiles OMG...THANKS is NOT NEARLY enough....HOW COOL IS THIS NOW!! I do have photoshop...I tried most of the day yesterday (boss was out of town) to create trees and such and could not get those to work out either. I think I got one to work right but wasn't really great. I will have to work more on textures CAT

Salut Stephan, For me good textures are more useful than very-accurate shapes. About the picture showing a city (N4a) : Is it the city of Pripryat as shown in the video game S.T.A.L.K.E.R ?

Hi folks. The Tape Measure Tool will scale along all the directions at once and yes, if you dont want to rescale the whole model but only a part of it, it must be used in the context of a group or a component. However, to rescale only in one direction, the tool to use is either the Move Tool, used with a carefull selection, or the Scale Tool. When using the Scale Tool, if you use a pure number, the number will be used as a scale factor. If you follow the number by a unit suffix like mm (for millimeters), for example, the real dimension will be used. Thus, even if you want to use your default unit, you must enter it after a number if you dont want the Scale Tool to consider the inputted number as a scale factor. And lastly, if you use the Move Tool or the Scale Tool, the object do not need to be in a group or a component. Just ideas.

The discussion about an "unbiased" method started here (in the Hardware recommendation topic) and later on they shared a model where they tested framerates if that's what you are after.

As well as how the script might decide what and what not to dimension we have all forgotten that dimensions are barely accessible through Ruby [layer, hidden etc and that's about it]. You can make an external component and insert it with X-scaling between the end points [with rotation to suit] and a Y-scaling for the offset for the leaders etc... then explode it ?

Hi each instance will work independently, but a problem occurs when you change the reference within the child to different parents or update a formula (all are updated), this can be overcome by making the component unique or by using parent! instead of the named parent component that way you can have many parents, But by using parent! you lose the automatic update reference function within the component. So depending on your requirements pick the technique to suit. cub!lenY , cubby!lenY, big!lenY can all be replaced with parent!lenY Note when editing or updating latter a specific reference will overwrite the parent! in all the children cheers

Yup, that video came to my mind, too. Note however that while it may work (and look nice) on faces with such "little" curve, if the curve is "deeper" (i.e. say close to a half circle) when projected, the material will be distorted on the sides. For your model now it's perfect of course.
