Hi Dick and welcome! Now do this to draw a line with 3' 8" (that's just my example - you can certainly use any other value): click somewhere where you want to draw your line. start drawing the line (pulling it out as a rubber band) towards the direction you want to draw it (for this, the best to align your drawing to the axes as your line will become red, green or blue while drawing, letting you know that you are along your chosen direction) now comes the tricky part: type 3'8" on your keyboard and hit Enter. In the meanwhile, you can see these values in the Measurement box at the bottom right of your SU window but note that you never have to click in there (more exactly never click in there to enter the values because it will not work - just type and enter) Also, if you are annoyed by the length snapping of SU, go to your Window menu > Model info dialog > Units and disable length snapping. Now save an empty file with these (and any other, custom) settings under File > "Save as template" and choose this template for SU to load with every time you open it under Window > Preferences > Templates.

Pardon my ignorance, but is there an even better, and freeware application called "Open Office", which unlike word, won't cost you a penny? Or am I missing something here? "Movie Scripts"??? What's "movie scripts" got to do with SketchUp? A nifty little viral marketing plug for Microsoft perhaps?!

Hi Gentle_Devil, hi folks. I would suggest going to this address: http://sketchup.google.com/intl/en/training/videos.html Try spending a few minutes watching at least the basic video tutorials to grasp how SketchUp (SU) works and what it can do. Investing a few more minutes or hours to watch the whole serie is not a bad idea either. Searching YouTube for more SU tutorials is another possibility. By the way, it is very easy to access this page and many others from the Help menu of SU. It is probably the most overlooked menu item of this software. If, after that, you are still puzzled on how to draw a bed, post back here and I am pretty sure that someone will make a short tutorial to get you started. Just ideas.

@imabzeous said: Hello can any body help me creating a window in curve wall Assuming you want to use a rectangular window (or windows) in a curved wall. Begin with a backing surface on which you draw a window-sized rectangle. Rectangle on the ground in front of the wall. Use Rotate tool to align your rectangle to the angle you want for the window. Pushpull rectangle up to over wall height. Tape out guides the size you want left, right, top and bottom of window. (Measure twice, cut once.) 4.5) Orbit to be sure your guides are flat against the backing surface. Fix as needed. Triple-click/Delete the backing surface. Rectangle between the guides. Pushpull the rectangle through the wall behind it. Edit/Intersect/With Model. Eraser to clean up the bits that stick out from the wall.

Ok, cheers guys. It's just hard to know what to do for the best, when the GE images obviously aren't perfect and I want to produce the best model possible.

Hi Take, If you really want to modelthe rope, you will easily find yourself with an extremely large model that is (almost) impossible to work with. Would a solution to do it with only the rope texturebe okay?

guys, i think i am having a similar problem. a big site where i located 3 buildings which i modeled separately in their own files. however, when they were brought into the big file i had to place them in new positions relative to their previous origins. then i took them back to the original files and pasted them in the same place as they are in the big file (so that moving them back and forth is easier). problems: in the original files the first origin is never forgotten when i want to have a facade view. in the big file my renderer (podium) does not "see" the buildings. any ideas? EDIT: apparently the problem went away after i closed sketchup and opened it again.

Hi sscott, There was no problem at all setting the image as wallpaper. There IS a subtle seam but not what you could see. I have no idea what went wrong with your student's model (if you can attach a template with it, we can have a look) [image: oP9j_Untitled.png] Note however that this image (for a tiling background) is extremely large and unnecessarily heavy in file size, too. 850x850 pixels is not needed for such a tiling background - you can downsample it to its fractions without any visual quality loss. I do not know if this caused any display issue on your computer. Untitled.skp

I also have another script called loose geometrry to groups that you mighr find useful. I wrote it specifically for what you are doing. It finds a face, then takes all touching edges and faces and turns that intoa group, then it moves on to the nect face that has not been added to a group and repeats the process. It is handy for quickly making groups of zillions of entire extruded buildings. I wrote it for the same process you are describing, something I was soing a LOT of at the time at work. I also have a snippet of code that I developed that takes a selection of faces and extrudes them by a given height, and a given amount of extrusions. It is used for selecting a bunch of flat building footprints then specifying how many storeys the building will have and how tall each storey is. And I even built in the ability to have the first floor be different than the other floors, since that is a common practice in planning to have a tall bottom floor with shorter upper floors. Let me know if that would be a useful script in your workflow and I'll clean it up and post it on Monday. Chris

@kiddieboy12 said: Life is all good!! install C++ redistribute 2005 sp1 and C++ redistribute 2008 SP1 and you should be able to install, please close. Hello. I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner; things were very busy getting our last release out the door over the holidays. I am glad you found a solution to your problem. Installing the VS 2005 SP1 redistributable is what I would have suggested if I had been able to respond in time. The part I find curious is that you also installed the 2008 redistributable. SketchUp is built in Visual Studio 2005 and therefore, that's the version of the redistributable package you need to install. Did you install 2008 for fun, because you needed it for another application, or because you thought SketchUp needed it? I'd really like to know because I can't think of any circumstances under which you would have needed 2008 for SketchUp to function, so if you did, I need to investigate it more closely. Thanks, Andrew
