I preferred Twightlight render. Very easy to learn and quite affordable.

For question 1, are these components imported from another source, or did you model them yourself. If imported, could be the component is bilaterally symmetrical, and the other half is a mirrored copy? For question 2, that is tougher, unless either the cad program is trying to interpret the faces or Sketchup is trying to interpret the geometry of the cad source file?

While other 3d modelling tools might support non-coplanar quads - SU does not. So in many cases it would be impossible to convert triangles to quads within Sketchup.

will it run SketchUp? my samsung n150 with intel gma grphic card, runs sketchup. maybe slow, but its runs. for ion, yes surely, and fine, now is the 1215n that will perform better. i bought an AMD e350 fusion with ati radeon hd 6130, and works great, its a sony Y series vpcyb15 ultraportable. its the amd alternative to ion2 and dual core atom, with similar specs. search for redway opengl turbine benchmark on google, there is a test with AMD e350 fusion. test it with your actual system to have an idea how it will work. i had wrote a review of my laptop on this reply http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/sketchup/thread?tid=23584ae0fb095178&hl=en im replying this post becouse this two treads where my only findings about sketchup and nvidia ion. then i found amd fusion alternative, but with no info from sketchup at all (since sketchup comunity tends to be appart from ati card). and i think they are at the same level for comparison. im not a fan of ati, and before this bought i would not recommend ati for sketchup. i think since amd bought ati, things changed for good. don´t know for high end desktop cards. maybe i will still sitck with nvidia. But i think with time ati will start to find good reviews on sketchup and 3dviz comunities.

So there is a little "trick" that I left out. The steps to scale to absolute lengths would be: Select everything you want to scale Select the scale Tool Scale the selection from one corner - don't worry about the size at this time. The Measurements box will not become available until you do this. After scaling, type in the dimensions including the units - 10",10",6" - and press Enter Because inches uses the " as the suffix, you need to use the Shift key, but the Shift key resets the Measurements box. This is why you need to go ahead and scale to an arbitrary size first, and enter the absolute lengths afterward. If you were using mm, then you could grab one corner, begin to scale, and before completing the scale operation, you could enter the lengths: 3mm,3mm,3mm (for example.)

That's a slick animation. @tomot said: I would hope Verlux don't consider this as a do-it yourself-home-handy-man-project. I think they may be leaning that way though... Last pair I installed had instruction sheets with "Tools needed for this project..." on the front.

Thank you so much for your 2 cents worth I really appreciate your answer! In order to give you more details about my pc, I had to download a little program (SIW for Windows) to learn what exactly I have under the hood. That program gave me far more information than I care to know, but here is in essence what my little pc is made of: Acer Aspire T135. Physical Memory 448MB. Virtual Memory 1056MB. AMD Sempron 64 3000+FSB800MHZ. 3 PCI and 1 AGP. OS:Windows XP Home & Linux Mint. I bought the machine maybe 4ish years ago for surfing the internet, writing letters and so on. This is definitely not a designers’ computer, but I am on a very tight budget so I can not buy a new machine. I am trying to model the house that I am currently living in – a traditional French farm house located in the French Alps. I have uploaded 3 pictures showing the project for you to see: http://www.monsamoens.com/sketchupexamples.html The model is made up of many layers of course so that Sketchup does not freak out, but even so, it is getting super difficult to more this building around in this stage of the project. I am making a video of this design and have tried to export scenes as AVI files and Flash files with Sketchup, but I found that the quality was simply awful and totally unusable. Could this be due to my non-existent graphics card ? To get around this, I export the scenes as individual png frames, and then string those frames together using VirtualDub to make AVI files. This works fine. You recommended an older GeForce card. I looked them up on the French Ebay and 27 cards are available, from cheap to OMG! The SIW program mentioned above says I have 3 PCI slots and 1 AGP slot. However, it does not tell me if the PCI slot is a PCI or PCI express slot! I have ordered a 1GB choco-bar of memory for my machine, so that should help the critter a wee bit. Maybe if I paint the computer case a Ferrari red with a nice white stripe, then that would speed things up… Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Hello, Smegan, Exporting a model in .FBX format assumes that you are using SketchUp Pro. A kind of workaround to import it using the free version of SU: http://sites.google.com/site/alexvaqp/sketchupblender From Blender, you should be able to export it as .3ds or .obj and then to Maya (hopefully). I hope this helps.

To see a section slice in a model, just nudge it away from your section plane by .01 or .1 inches (depending on scale / units / etc.). Works great... TIG's tool sounds great - but I use the built in tool to create a group, nudge it into the part of the model that is showing. I'll often slide it over 1000" or some handy number, make it into a component, and then edit, fill in the solids with various colors, textures, etc. Then detail it in LayOut.
