The path is a component and the profile is a component. FollowMe only works on a path that's 'lines' and a profile that's a face. You can [as previously explained] simply explode both components back to edges and a face. The face will now 'extrude' around the path and the result will be in the shared context [here it's the 'model' but it could just as easily have been inside another group etc..] So for example if you want to make the 'extrusion' inside the path-component... First edit the face-component, select the face and Edit>Copy it to the clipboard. Now exit that edit and edit the path-component, use Edit>Paste-in-Place and a copy of the face is now added into that context. Still within the edit - select the path edges. Still within the edit - now run FollowMe and click on the face. The face will now 'extrude' around the path inside the component... This method leaves the original face component unchanged. An alternative, if you don't want the face component to remain, is to go back to ### Select the face-component and Edit>Cut it to the clipboard. Now edit the path-component, use Edit>Paste-in-Place and a copy of the face-component is now added into that context. Still within the edit - select the face-component and Explode it back to be just a 'face'. Still within the edit - select the path edges. Still within the edit - now run FollowMe and click on the face. The face will now 'extrude' around the path inside the component... This time the face-component is no longer there.

Yeah, the Bead is not going to scale without distortion. So you might try separating it into individual components, and setting their positions relative to one another. I used 3, but you might be able to get away with only 2 - the bead, and the rest. Note, too that I changed the Axes of the individual components to make the formulas as simple as possible. You can select the church building, and open the material browser. The shortcut key is 'b' by default. Press that and it should open the material browser. Then select a color and apply it to the building. Is that at all what you are asking?

Well, imnporting your terrain from Google Earth will automaticaly geo-locate your model. Then do you want to continue working in GSP type coordinates after that? Or what are you trying to get at? I'm a little confused by all the different options you posted. What do you need? A tool that lets you enter coordinates instead of lengths and distances? Chris

Hi guys, I work on a MAC and use Final Cut Express for all of my movie editing. Sorry I can't help more with the window side of things. I always export out image sequences, too, instead of a pre-compressed movie. Other than giving me more editing options, image sequences are nice when SU crashes during export and you can start exporting from the last rendered scene transition instead of having to start over. I use PNG as it is uncompressed and the files are small in size. I also try to avoid materials with lots of contrast as high contrast textures also flicker and flash during playback. I will sometimes go so far as to edit a desired material in photoshop to minimize contrast. Groundcover textures are particularly troublesome, in my experience.

@genma saotome said: There are times where I take a component in a model and rotate it for use in another situation. Because the axis of the component instance also rotates. I have many situations where that's not acceptable, so I have to explode the new instance and make a new component under a new name. It would be far easier if there was a function I could use that reoriented the component axis to the same as the whole model -- the move axis feature is far too cumbersome... I simply want a single click - bang - it's done solution. Absolutely dead on. In most cases I have to maintain a separate copy of a comp. on a development layer simply to preserve the axis alignment for editing. ============================== In a similar vein, component scaling should be modified as well. When you copy a scaled comp, say a set of comps that taper, such as a flap linkage component of a wing, big at the root, small at the tip, the scale of the copy is at the original scale. If the intermediate comps scale at 1.78% per object, AND must maintain axis alignment (along a non axis guide line) then it becomes very difficult, as well as growing inaccurate to compound scale the original comp, rather than just applying a common scale factor to each subsequent copy. If you need a copy at the original scale, then take it from the comp.library, or the original object. Better yet, if copying a scaled comp, popup a d-box asking for "original scale", "last scale ratio" or "new scale ratio" and be done with it. Last Scale Ratio would be especially useful where the scaling is different along the 3 axis, ie: not 2x all round, but 2x green, 2.5x red and 1.995X blue.

You could use the tape measure to find out how long the model is, then if you know what length its meant to be you can work out the scale factor you need to get it back to the correct size. For example, say its 1.25m in the red direction and its meant to be 1m, then if you scaled by 0.8 in the red direction itd be the correct size. Rinse and repeat for the green direction. You can work out the scale factor using length it should be/actual length.

I have found that the white squares occur sometimes after I have used the function keys to minimize, expose, etc. Without fail, a restart of Sketchup fixes this weirdness. I have found that inferences are less effective in SU7; sometimes it won't pick up intersecting points and sometimes it tries to pick up something behind the desired point. Definitely different than ver6, IMO.

@anssi said: One thing that might be worth a try would be to import the old file as a component in a new, clean file. Anssi Even after I found an earlier backup that was stable enough to work with, it also began locking up after a couple of hours. So I tried your suggestion, and made a component of the model, then imported it into a clean file. So far, knock on wood, it seems to be back to normal. Thanks for the tip.

If all you need to do, is to change an image from 96 dpi to 300 dpi, most image editors will do so. Keep in mind that the physical size of the image will shrink accordingly. [image: L236_Temp04.jpg]

@genesco said: Hey thanks for this, this is pretty close for the larger roof (top left) but not for the one on bottom right. [attachment=0:1q4lxag9]<!-- ia0 -->tricky roof2.jpg<!-- ia0 -->[/attachment:1q4lxag9] Suggest you think about: looks like a line missing on the bottom left cricket or dormer Think you should be able to use the move tool to pull up to get slopes etc once you can include a slope ref for the dormers. What you have looks strange to me can you post what you have for the SU model vs forcing us to try and deciher the pics. Give a size ref also so the pics can be set to scale just some thoughts

@rhysifan said: WOW! curviloft works like a charm. thank you! In your case, I would suggest you use Curviloft "Loft by Spline" (instead of Loft Along), so ignoring the curve. Just select the two faces, and then use the method "Orthogonal Elliptic" (small red arc of circle icon in the button palette). This will make the bended portion orthogonal to each straight rail end. Almost exclusively. I'm not entirely sure why 3ds Max seems to be the go-to program for arch-viz. It may be a 'better' modeler in terms of features and flexibility but it's not even close to being as intuitive as SU and SU can do 95% of what 3ds Max can do in terms of Arch-Viz modeling. I could see myself someday getting to the point where I use 3ds Max for my site work, but it's hard to find a compelling reason to model a building in 3ds Max as opposed to SU. -Brodie

@kralj said: so its just that? chrome and you'll see through the black glass/plastic? It depends on the material's properties how well you see through them, you should try more materials and tweak their settings, but basically to see inside you need a clear glass material, a reflective chrome like material on the inside and or an emissive material for the lights.

Thanks to everyone who passed on some suggestions on creating "draft". I discovered the perfect solutions to the problem. I found the plugin "Chamfer_Along_Path" allows me to cut the necessary angle not only on straight edges, but, curves as well. Using "smart extrude" maintains the chamfer as I extrude upward. I was able to ultimately create the entire horseshoe with SketchUp. It was converted to .stl format and submitted for 3D printing. I do have one issue that gives me problems of alignment which I'll post in the Newbie section...Bob

I use a few ruby scripts to match the cameras between sketchup and renders. I don't recall the exact names, camera controls? to get the tilt, pan and rotation. I also use a script that places a construction point at the position of the cameras. I then draw a tiny circle at the point and paint a material named camera# onto that circle. When I go into whatever render I am using usually Vue.( I can't get the script for Vue cameras to work) I place a camera at the position of the tiny circle that I exported with the model. I then adjust the camera orientation based on my camera settings I read from camera controls. I use the field of view setting from sketchup. Depending on the render you might need to adjust the angles of the camera. If camera control script said the camera was at -30 degrees you might have to enter it as 330 degrees in the render. Hope that helps.
