Hi Helmi, Do you know or use AutoCAD ? I did some short guideline on how to vectorize PDF -> AutoCAD -> SU - assuming that PDF has linework. http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=45500 I was checking other options using Free Inkscape - from PNG directly to DXF R13 Result below... Thanks for such a fast reply Tig. I set the Profile to ON and thickened up the lines a little. Gave me a much better idea of what was going on. There was indeed a line missing along the inner most edge of the section I needed to define. While I couldn't quite get the newly drawn line to go exactly where needed (slight offset), I was able to more/less achieve what I was trying to do. No doubt I just need to "play" with it a little more to figure it out but at least I'm now pointed in the right direction. Thanks again!

a 2d elipse or circle like you said int he first post is a VERY different beast than a 3d shape. Please try to not leave out important details like that There are scripts that will subdivide 3d shapes like artisan or subdivideandsmooth. You could try those. Subdivide - Free http://www.smustard.com/script/Subdivide Loop Subdivision - Free http://www.guitar-list.com/download-software/sketchup-loop-subdivision-smooth-plugin Subdivide and Smooth - $15 http://www.smustard.com/script/SubdivideAndSmooth Artisan - $29 on sale right now http://artisan4sketchup.com/ Though frankly, I'm not sure that subdivision will automagically make your model better. But it might be worth trying! Chris

Hi Yehonatan, sorry you're having troubles. This is not something we're hearing complaints about so far. But you're seeing it on more than one computer? If you remove all plugins does it go away? Do you have any plugins that modify your toolbars or attempt to manage them? I would recommend removing plugins and go through the process again of adding them back. It sounds like there might be one that somehow is messing things up, but it might take a little while before it is noticeable. That is my first guess. You could also send me a zip files of your plugins folder and I'll see if I can recreate the issue. Let me know if that sounds like a good option, I'll give you an email that you can email it to. Thanks, Chris

That is really good news. I've done many, many renderings, and and am looking forward to using the program for construction drawings as well. Thanks for letting me know.

Thanks so much for that very clear explanation. It worked exactly as advertised. How to really modify component axes has been a mystery until now.

That's it. No reason why that shouldn't work. The lack of metric (just can't if everything keeps coming in feet and inches) is the reason for this. Since my plans are eventually in feet and inches I used to always refer to that. However in measuring buildings the notation becomes busy and sometimes gets confused. Typing feet and inches as input on a whole measure plan is also more tedious. Decimal inches is what I now use on my Disto and for marking, and laying out a plan, but if you can't check your work quickly, it adds another little task. I can always set the CAD to ft and in for dimensioning later. When I work with someone else who insists on measuring Ft. and inches, like I will today, I have to reset the disto and do it all long hand.

[image: 8FpH_testrender.jpg]Ah, got it! (I did say it's been a few years since I trod forum boards ;o)) So the image shows a model (by Alan Fraser @ FormFonts) imported into my Cad program and rendered (quickly!). The left image is the direct dwg import from SU, the middle and right models show the tinkering with settings from the fbx conversion. As you can see there is some smoothing occuring in the transfer, but not enough to make the model look any good! Anyone else have any suggestions? A

@unknownuser said: it'll never be able to make it a solid object with Sketchup's native tools.. That's not really true, any shape can be made solid using nothing more than the line drawing tool. The trick is to think of the surface divided up into triangles (or quadrilaterals where you can make four coplanar edges)... [image: dfUS_ManualTriangulate.jpg] ...you can see here how I am adding a surface to the top of the uneven curve by simply drawing in triangles one at a time. Once they are all drawn in, you can use the eraser tool (with Ctrl held down) tool to smooth those lines into a continuous surface. The many skinning and lofting plugins available do make this a lot quicker and simpler, but doing it by hand can sometimes give more control over the triangulation so that the "undulations" of the resulting surface are as you would like - and doing a few manual ones will also give you a feel for how the "skinning" plugins works for a better understanding of the variables in their setup dialogues.

Hi, You can perform an intersection: http://www.aecbytes.com/tipsandtricks/2008/issue34-sketchup.html or you can use Fredo´s Tools on Surface and Joint Push Pull (search the plugins index http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=28782)

Select 'contours' >> 'COPY' >> 'Sanbox' from contours >> 'Edit' group >> 'Paste in Place' >> Select 'surface' between contours >> 'Cut' >> 'Undo' >> 'Undo' >> 'Undo' >> 'Paste in Place'.... Done use Undo to remove unwanted. +1 Using undo and paste in place is often the better solution ! Why not just select the surface between contours, copy, close group and erase, paste in place? why the undo's? Just take what you wanted and throw the rest away. I like the undo 'cause this way I'm sure there's not unused components in the file...It's not a problem here as the created terrain is a group, but It's an habit I have.

I don't exactly understandt what you said, but I tried exporting from su importing blender and exporitng from there. Reimported into SU the mesh is as it should be but imported in max it's still no good...but anyway apparently a solution has been found in max.
