There is no built-in SketchUp way. But can I suggest the Component Definition that is made by the Import process is given the original file location in its Description, immediately after it is added. This is a management matter, but at least you then have the path in SUp. Alternatively on the CAD side, before importing you could add the file's path as a piece of Mtext in Model-Space [perhaps on a Layer named MY_PATH ?] and then Explode it, then it is imported as edges into SUp...

SketchUp has known issues when plugins use certain techniques such as view.draw_text on high dpi displays. The text (or other graphic) comes out tiny and the only way a user can enlarge it is to shift to a lower dpi display mode (which, of course, decreases the resolution of everything on the screen). Hopefully Trimble will address this someday, as it make certain plugins nearly unusable.

SU v2015 is working great on Yosemite, I only needed a couple of Plugin updates [that where available]. I know I'm letting people know on every thread that mentions Yosemite, but it is worth upgrading SU if you are running Yosemite... You can keep v8/v13/v14 as well but they'll still have to wait for any 'Text' or 'Atos' patches... john

@ntxdave said: I have tried several times and continually get the error message I previously showed. Anyone have any idea about what I might be doing wrong? If I get this to work and I have my own classifications, is there a way to provide a drop down list of the classification categories so that I can just select the one the component belongs to? Not exactly how sure I am that this really accomplishes anything for me though. Exactly. If you create your own classification schema, it will allow you to assign your components as different "object types" from a list. In addition to that, once an object type is assigned, you can then set attribute values according to which object type you assigned. For example, you might have several object types in your classification schema: window, door, roof, wall, floor. The window object type, for example, might have the following attributes available: Manufacturer, model number, R-value, style, etc. So there's two levels of information: Tag it as a specific object type, then assign attributes according to the object type. So once you tag your window component as a "window object", you can then go to the Component Options window and set values for each of the attributes. The problem right now, as I see it, is the default schema is IFC2x3, which is utterly confusing for someone who doesn't know what IFC is. And it's not easy for the average person to learn how to create their own schema. Hopefully a solution is made to simplify the creation of custom classification schema. The advantage of adding this data, is that in LayOut 2015, the label tool can now READ that data from your viewports and display it in your LayOut documents. I'm sure we'll be seeing some plugins pop up for SketchUp that will create some nice reports of classification data as well.

You could mark corners of the object on site before making a photo, just for help...In the case when there is no orthogonal lines, I would use that photo as watermark image in SU (under style). You can adjust your view of the model to match the watermark background, which stays fixed while rotating the view. Later on, you can use it in render application as background.

Thanks for the responses. I've use all methods listed other than the boolean. Seems like the suggestion of making a component for reuse is a good idea. Can't believe I never thought of it. Thanks

Thanks for the help guys, I got in to see an email from them this morning telling me that they hadn't received my email at all. Not sure where that's gone; lost in the ether of the internet somewhere.

Thank you. That makes sense now. I do use layers, so I can turn them off when needed.

I use DIBAC for laying out my walls in plan (2D). What is attractive about DIBAC is that it is very fast for editing layouts before the walls are lifted up, either with its own internal tools, or simply with the push pull tool itself. To be able to edit quickly in plan is the key - as I imagine you can agree. DIBAC allows me to do so. Good luck.

That's fair, it was just a bit confusing, your "Noobyness" comment suggested that you may have simply downloaded the models and therefore had no real understanding of sketchup, rather than just a gap in your knowledge.

I don't think there's a way to do that with the native tools. You'll have to get an animation plug-in. Search the Extension warehouse for one, I'm sure someone made one already.
