Go to the videos link that is pinned at the top of these forums, there is a video on pool water and caustics. This will answer all of your questions.

I really cannot stress enough, if you watch all of these vids, about 2 hours worth, you will really have a deep understanding of this plug-in.

I don' think there's any way directly but you should be able to hack something together. This is the first thing I'd try.

In 3ds max get the xyz coordinates of both the camera and the target and draw a line from one point to the other. Then export that line as 3ds or dae and import it into SU. Then you should be able to use the Position Camera tool selecting first the camera location end of the line and then the camera target end of the line. Just make sure your lens size (35mm, 55mm, etc.) matches the 3ds max camera as well.

You can export geometry from SketchUp. OBJ and 3DS formats seem to be the preferred. I am sure there are plenty of programs that can do baking. V-Ray in SketchUp is not one of them though.

no, that's exactly what i'm not asking πŸ˜„ (although i have been trying to resolve the issue in another thread, about this time last year.)

what i would want is this: i press the render button and if i hit Esc (which should stop the rendering process) or the render finishes, it saves the render (or whatever is in the framebuffer at the moment of cancellation) to a previously specified folder with a name for example autosave0000.png. then when i hit render again (to see how my material changed), the file saved would be autosave0001.png.

or it could use a timestamp or i don't know what.

hm, but i guess this is a work for a separate script, rather than a matter of settings in vray...

Hi, I bet many have asked or noticed this already- the "reset color" in material editor is greyed out since I installed Vray, now it's hard to revert to original texture after playing around with sliders. Also, my textures was automatically saved and renamed into a temp folder (Chaos Group), not a big deal though..

Have someone figured out how to unlink Vray from overriding my materials control? I appreciate any help, I'm really hoping to get the "reset color" button working again. Thanks a lot!

PS: (to Admin) If this is the wrong section, please move it. thanks!

This is something you should report to the V-ray for SketchUp developers so they can address it.
(Also, it's useful to include V-Ray and SketchUp version when asking questions like this given how different version may act differently.)

The very first version has all sorts of oddities. The newer versions automatically syncs all materials. There is no link or unlink.
There was never any unlink though.

    Hi guys. Solved the problem...

What I did was to copy all my materials/IES etc to my spawner with the exact file path. That solved all problems

Then when I tried to use the Vray Material Editor, had several errors and was unable to render. Did the same thing, and testing it out now as I type. Everything looks ok so far, but might need to tweak certain things.

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

I found somewhat of a solution to this, at least what helps for me. Use only rectangular lights, STORE TO IRRADIANCE MAP checked for sure, render with irradiance map as primary engine and use as little omnis and other lights as possible because they cant be stored to irradiance map (no option for that). And output file as .exr vrimage.

You can use the jpegs as your material maps, but you will not be able to the material files. These files are for V-Ray for 3D Studio and the SketchUp plugin has its own format .vismat

This site has some free vismats http://luzindirecta.org/ and there a ton on the Chaos site (for registered users).

There are new tutorials for our public beta that started today!
    http:http://www.chaosgroup.com/en/2/vrayforsketchup_beta.html

Lynda.com have a tutorial course: "Vray for Sketchup" which is the best video I have seen explaining how to go about things. It is simple and clear... unlike some of the videos from ChaosGroup, where it's hard to understand the accents of the teachers.

The worst part of YouTube tutorials is when the narrator starts talking about 500 things a viewer does not need to think, or hear about, at the moment.

Also, it would be nice if someone at Chaos would have thought - gee, a factory reset button would be nice to get novices back to where things start.

importing an image only works for flat logos - the drinking glass one would have to be mapped. Also, make sure the "use alpha for transparency" is checked in the vray material.

Yes it worked fine and i found the use alphafor transparency, this one must only in the diffuse layer with the imported logo.

By the way nice bottles you made, i will try these also to make

Sounds like you are trying to render a heavy model file. I agree that saving and restarting SU will probably help. I have found that with these issues, VRay clears reflections and some alpha map settings when you get this error. You should go through your materials list and verify that this has not happened, the re-render.

    Hi Fred,

When SketchUp crashes, do you see a dialog where you can submit a crash report? If so, can you submit a crash with your e-mail (you can private message me with it) or with some unique comment that I can search on and find? I'll look up the crash and see if gives us any clues.

    Regards,
