Yes. This option is really necessary. Maybe solution to the problem can be of a button "turn off/on subdivided" for all subd-objects in file. We can turn off all subdivided objects before saving. And turn on after reload.

That could be a useful function, indeed. I'm logging a feature request for that.

I've already created a detailed outline of the island using Google Earth in SKP. The Island is mostly quite rugged terrain overall. I'm fairly new to SubD/Vertex Tools & see the advantage of using the Quad mesh. Do you think SubD/Vertex Tools would work for this approach? I was going to break the Island up into large blocks (sections) to work on at first with maybe a grid format of 5000mm? to get started & then infill areas as required. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Steve

Sorry if i answer late (too late i suppose) i missed this post at all.
This can actually work. i'm pretty sure because i did a similar project and achieved a good result with the very same process you've described..
you can convert the low poly google earth mesh to quads, then detach some plate in the areas were you need more detail and use a mix of sub-d and vertex tools to add geometry and deform it as required..
you will get an heavy, but still workable model, if you manage it properly.. πŸ‘

Is there something between instance and faces size ?

yes there is, and it's the "scale definition" property..
and i've found that may cause trouble for sub-d (and other tools/plugins too)

ive been trying to download the new version and intalling it , and it replaces the licensed version and and such that it doesnt work anymore.

    The extension doesn't work?

(Oh wait - you asked in regard to Vertex Tools? You coming from an older version and updated to v1.2? You no longer use a username and password to activate. You now use a serial key. All existing customers would have received emails with their serial keys. Though some times they get caught in spam filters. You can use this URL to have the email sent again: http://evilsoftwareempire.com/recover-order)

Could be that there was still a SketchUp process still using some of the files from the old version.

Let me know if it should return.

Ok, thanks. I will make sure to save the model if I run into it again. Thanks again for a great plugin!

I hope you post images of your progress. Very nice to see how people use the tool.

I hope that OpenSubdiv will improve texture mapping. But I've yet to see - I need to get it hooked up. But I'm hoping that OSD along with WrapR will make a killer combo. πŸ˜„

I'm afraid there is no tool as of yet that does this. I'd recommend you file it as a feature request to QFT: https://bitbucket.org/thomthom/subd/issues/

It'd be a good addition. Or possibly see if Fredo would be interested in looking into if it could be added easily to his JPP.

Great test model! I'm more partial to coke, though. πŸ˜›

Just be aware shep that the actual corner vertices can be creased as well as the edges. You'll get different results if you don't do the corners. If you notice in the gif when I select the crease tool the corners are already red. meaning I have creased them before recording.

Thanks Rich. Will the browser eventually have subd mode (showing the subd basic divisions)? I thought you posted that before. BTW I notice the viewer does not give access to controls once it is full screen or is that just my setup?

Yes! This is high up on the list. It's very annoying then the triangulation disappear as you are working with the mesh.

It seems that Maxwell already does something similar using Pixar subdivision.

Yea - I just noticed they appear to have OpenSubdiv support. (Which is what I'm working on right now - replacing my own subdivision engine with the industry standard.)

But yea, as Thomas mentions - we've been talking to some render engines in trying to find a generic way for extensions to be able to provide high-poly replacements for objects in a SketchUp model. A generic system that would allow any extension to declare itself as a proxy provider and then have render engines consume the result without needing to know anything about the other extension.

Notice how important Creasing sets(based on angle value, see at 7.20) are. Hope Thomthom will deliver them soon.
NB The second part is interesting too
