BlenderGIS can get you pretty good images.. you do need an API key to get set up but it's all free and you can even generate 3d geometry based on the elevations in the satellite images.. it tiles in blender so you the more you zoom the better the image quality to a point.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

@remus said: Whaat has also produced a UV mapping ruby, that allows you to spherical and cylindrical maps. You can find it in the ruby forum. Its pretty good at what it does, but its still pretty limited. I wonder UV coordinates if it would export to maxwell. But then again I do have some UV spherical and cylindrical mapping in Maxwell studio. I was hoping there was "something" more helpful

@alan fraser said: You can triple click the dome to highlight all the surfaces and the lines then r-click and choose Soften/Smooth Edges from the context menu. Adjust the slider till they all disappear. If you want to smooth only a few specific edges, use the Eraser with Ctrl held down. thanx guys. alan, that worked great

If you have lots of faces to reverse try the free ReverseFaces.rb plugin from Smustard. (http://www.smustard.com)

You should be able to apply a texture to anything in SU regardless of its origin.Note however that if it comes grouped or as component, you may first need to explode it or enter its editing context (double click to edit)

i think i i get it it now. i dont want to just make layers/groups/components just for the sake of making layers and groups/components i want to make them for a needed use, like for example, making a component to create multiple edited copies, or a group to er group. i think that was a my problem, i was trying to make all these complicated layers with groups and components and it was making editing very difficult because each group/component was connected to a different layer. and when i wanted to edit one layer on one component, i had to edit any layer that was connected when i selected 'edit component' till i realized that i don't need need to do that because as you said groups/components have nothing to do with layers

Oh, sorry, I wanted to link to Fredo's and didn't even check the link just copied it. The one I linked to creates surfaces (or grids) based on bezier curves. Great script, too!

well, maya has quite a good documentation too. and you can literally do anything with it. but the lord of the rings seems a a short magazine compared to this huge manual I love the ammount of control maya gives you though. seperate control over faces, edges, whole curves, or vertexes, together with loads of different snap modes. that is really some nice programm. but by the time you are able to create simple objects, you will design complicated shapes with SketchUp...

Yeah, also the drape tool. One can never spare some investigation in glitches and some hand work on the model.

@brokenstaral said: ...in fact i find the section-cut ruby isn't as much useful as i had expected... It is (or can be) indeed very useful. True it is mainly useful for a SU output but keep in mind that section cuts cannot be exported into any rendering apps. SectionCutFace actually creates a group which (or the different faces of which) you can paint just like any other face OR use it as a "saw" to intersect your geometry and still keep a face after you deleted unwanted geometry. Now this cut cafe can already be exported (otherwise you would end up with hollow geometry and a bunch of back faces that export awfully into other apps).
