@Rich-O-Brien Thanks Rich. Now I know that I can share the link with Fredo6 on the Animator thread so he can download the file and look at it (to hopefully identify the problem I have been having trying to generate a video). You might also try generating an Animator video and see what results you get.

Hey guys I am desperate for very high resolution/quality satellite maps, I use Placemaker and I also use Nearmap but the resolution is not that great, I have tried using AI to upscale but that too does not really solve my issues. Is there another solution?

Hey Mike, I'm sure you figured this out already, but when you first create the attribute type a number with the inch mark like 0" or 0' in the value box and hit enter. This will set the unit for that attribute to inches. This only works for the first time a value is entered. After that first initial value, you will need to use the attribute info dialog to make changes. In addition, you can use 0 to set it to text (not "Default: Text") and 0cm to set it to centimeters. If anyone knows a shortcut for setting the unit to Decimal Number, I would love to hear it!

@Catnkar12 when in finder use command j or go to View in the title bar and choose Show View Options. If you don't want it to show all the time go to Go in title bar and when mouse hovers over Go is selected hit the option key.

What you plan to do with the model makes a difference too. You may want all the components as solids so you can print them individually, therefore needing the joining faces, or if you want to explode everything into one big solid when you have finished modelling, then removing the joins is helpful. With a large variety of possible software and usage I don't think there is one best option.

One more option... Download a fresh copy of the SU13 installation files just in case they were corrupted during the original download. You may already know this but if you think it might be memory you can check by pressing the Ctrl-Alt-Delete and selecting "Task Manager" which will show you memory usage. I can run most things within 2Gb I upgraded to 4Gb because I was dealing with some large images in LO. 1Gb is probably unlikely to work well even with SU8.

Thanks Rich, I have a friend who is learning revit. I'll send him the file and see if he could export to something usable. I'll post results here when I find out.

@joe wood said: ...except for the video card and even that is slowing my SUp only a little bit... so, I'm a little confused about which card to get, could I get a link to a card I can just order? the CPU is the crucial issue for speed in SU. The video system needs to provide reliable OpenGL support first, which automatically means a dedicated and therefore capable video card to some extent. The best/fastest/latest GeForce for ol' systems w/ AGP slot is the 7800 series. You can buy a new (expensive) GF 7800 GS at Amazon... or do a fall back to the cheaper and less power consumpting GF 7600 GS. Good Luck again, Norbert

I expect the issue is that the CAD import is only edges, no faces. That's normal for a 2D CAD import.

As a quick reference, if you zoom in on the axis lines, you will notice that the Red and Green lines are dotted on one side of the vertical axes, and solid on the other. The solid green is north The dotted green is south Solid red line is east Dotted red line is west

The problem is the UI in sketchup, it was designed to be used on a 2d screen, to model in Real 3D using sketchup Trimble will need to redesign the UI for use in 3D, can it be done, yes of course, are they doing it? unfortunately not

You may turn off "export 2sided faces" during export (theres an options button allowing you to specify some settings).

You don't have to upgrade if what you've got is working for you. I would make sure it's the latest version of SU8, though.

@box said: What you are experiencing is not normal behavior. Yep, I know, seems I am continuing heading down hill with this computer. I was just curious, going to hope an upgrade on the operating system will help. Righ now I am stuck with IE 8. So this could be some of my problems. Ken

Hi SU Power Users, You've got less than two weeks left to send your candidature to apply for the book. I've already received some great case studies about many uses of SketchUp but there's still room for a few more, including in architecture and interior design. If you think you've got great advices to share with the readers, don't be late ! Send me your candidature to contact AT arch-image.com or by PM. Best Regards, Laurent http://www.arch-image.com/tag/sketchup/ (in French)

Thanks for that. It worked but with some drawbacks. The original image I was using was an Arroway texture so it was tiled. Painting a rectangle with the edited version and then saving it and reimporting loses the tiling. Also, for some reason the original wrapped itself around the tree trunk cleanly, showing little of the faceting that occurs when wrapping a cylinder with a texture but the re-imported image breaks up along the facets. Not sure why. I guess the answer is to go back to the original image, save it under a new name and make the necessary changes in Photoshop. But I find that to be unfortunate because, minor though it may be, SketchUp's material editor seems to always give me exactly what I want, whereas Photoshop tends to feel like taking a battleship out for a Sunday boating on the lake. Anyways, thanks for your reply, I'm sure the technique will prove useful in many situations. Have a good Sunday ...

And show everyone what YOU are doing. A week or two and you'll get an idea, I hope, of how your own progress will go.
