Make it a component and save it to a component collection, then select and place it from the component panel whenever you need it.

Hey guys I am desperate for very high resolution/quality satellite maps, I use Placemaker and I also use Nearmap but the resolution is not that great, I have tried using AI to upscale but that too does not really solve my issues. Is there another solution?

@glenn at home said: That's usually the 1st thing I filter out of a dwg before going into SU. Are you using them for a particular reason or just reference? TIS FOR REFERENCE. I can look at the cad file separately on one of my screens but I have always wished I could have the text right in the imported cad file on a separate layer so I can switch it off & on rather than turning my head...yeah, I know...lazy. Thanks TIG, I figured you probably addressed this 100 or so years ago. p

@pcmoor said: A component file is created via the right click menu "saveas" If you open this file you see its contents not the parent, so saving leaves a parent with the groups as per your file, You need to import the file as done and explode then via right click "saveas" to overwrite or drag and drop. then the parent data is destroyed thank you very much pcmoor. I suspected there must be 'parent data' buried in the file somewhere - I just couldn't figure out where it lives or how to access and then delete it. And I was not aware of the 'best practices' of saving a component to disk via the select - right-click - Save As operations. I have always just saved a model to disk with the File -> Save As... option - without first making the model a component - and then relied on the File -> Import... into my larger model to turn that model into a component. I shall make better use of the component -> Save As... operation.

Are you holding Ctrl? If so, don't. A simple tap will activate the Copy function of the Move tool. This function was updated in a maintenance release of 2021. Read the tip at the bottom left of the screen when you have the Move tool. Notice that a double tap of Ctrl activates a Stamp tool which will place copies of your object wherever you click to drop one. BTW, your forum profile shows you are using SketchUp 2016. Please update that information.

I tried Universal Importer and did not have much success, at least with the models I tried which was a rather complex one (see the model in my original post). One of the problems I have encountered with the dae files/models I have tried to import was missing faces. I think the solution for me is to find an alternative source/sources to the 3D Warehouse since I can no longer download skp files from there.

@dave r said: In your example, since you haven't really drawn the rafters, you could scale the roof to change the pitch. I made a group of all of the roof lines and, at one end I drew in a couple of guides with the Protractor with the desired roof pitch. I used 4:12 in this case. Then just scale the group down to the intersection. Probably you would want to divide up the roof into seperate groups so you could scale the narrower section individually. Click on the picture if it doesn't animate immediately. [attachment=0:y9rjs0cs]<!-- ia0 -->roof.gif<!-- ia0 -->[/attachment:y9rjs0cs] I drew it that way to get a total LFT of rafter lengths. Your example is exactly what I'm trying to do. I had tried scale before and did not get the desired results. Surely user error. Will have another go at it. Thanks for that animation ... that's great.

Hard to tell what caused it. I did a site plan which was just a quick tracing of an existing site plan and then made the mistake of plotting a PDF in perspective instead of parallel projection and the whole thing was off. A slight perspective view might throw things off. Any little object with a positive or negative z value. I use flatten.lsp in Autocad to flatten all line work most of the time. This is especially useful when you're drawing over a survey with topography that can be thousands of feet above the ground plane. Even a 3D door will do the same when snapping lines. I'm still old school with Autocad using what's basically a modern version of Autocad 15 and 20 years old. Works great. Non-planar faces in Sketchup can also create a mess.

you could open the SU program directory at: C;\Program Files\SketchUp\SketchUp 202#\ and delete the sub-directories "\LayOut" and "\StyleBuilder". Don't be surprised if glitches may happen.

@unknownuser said: Your suggestion to reset the model axes seemed like it would be helpful, it at least sounded like it could be the solution. However, the option to reset the axes is greyed out; I presume they are then already in their default state. I did write, "If the model axes have been shifted ..." Since you haven't shared the SketchUp file there's no way I could know whether you had moved the axes or not. @unknownuser said: There's two sets of coordinate systems at play. One is the photomatch - pair of red and green dashed lines, red and green vanishing points, the yellow horizon and the yellow Origin point. The other is the model, or 3D space, with red, green and yellow axes, meeting at their own Zero point. Not really. When you are setting up the image for Match Photo you are setting up the camera to match the lens used to make the photo and aligning the image to the model axes. I have no way to identify how you got it shifted. I guess I will leave you to it.
