(i have had podium for years and always just take it with me from one sketchup version to another)
Maybe this is your problem. That's generally not a good thing to do because there are often changes made between SketchUp versions that require extensions to be updated. It is best to install all extensions fresh from the source when upgrading to a new SketchUp version.
The easiest way I found was by using the DIBAC plugin, it recognizes the cut face according to the texture selected for the GROUP, regardless of the colors of the faces.

I'll have to do some research to see if there is a way to update your list of extensions. It hasn't been an issue for me since I know they aren't installed. I rarely have a need to even look at that list.
Thanks again for all your input I was away and couldn't get back to you until now. I worked out what the problem was and found the file with thanks to Tigs instructions. All sorted. I was then able to open sketchup without the pop up window opening.
no I'm on 2017 can't work out how to change my profile thing any help with that would be good. I always put "I'm on Mac Version 2017 pro user etc" at the top of my posts now.
Click on Settings.

Under Edit Profile, scroll down a bit to find SketchUp version. Make any other changes and then click on Submit.

2017 VERSION, ITS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE I UPDATED ON DAY ONE OF 2017 BEING AVAILABLE. LAST WEEK I UPDATED TO LATEST VERSION AS HOPED THIS WOULD SOLVE IT BUT IT HASNT. NOT WORKED OUT HOW TO CHANGE PROFILE DONT COME ON HERE THAT OFTEN ANYMORE. NO NEW PLUGINS HAVE BEEN INSTALLED.
I know about the checkbox in preferences and checked it a long time ago. However sketch up is the only application that still exhibits this behaviour. Its like its immune from it. Any other ideas?
Here's another example. I just softened the edges on the cubes but on the right I first made offsets on the three visible faces. After softening the cube edges, I hid the offset lines and you can see how that affects shading.
