Shadows make sketchup hang

Hi Again,
Second post this week, I have recently re-installed due to this and other problems. The other problems seem to have sorted themselves with the reinstall however I am still getting a hang when I try and turn on shadows in a scene, not a complex models but for some reason I get the spinning wheel of death and have to force quit. This is going to be a problem as I need to present the models in Layout with shadows.
Any known bugs - this has only recently started happening, I have cleaned up the model, everything is solid 10mb file down from 36mb after clean up. don't know what else to do.
Any help greatly appreciated as always.

Have you activated Hardware Acceleration, on Preferences?

Don't think so, i can't find hardware acceleration in my preferences, am I looking in the right place?

AFAIK SU2017 always has the old hardware acceleration on since the new graphics engine requires it.

That's correct. Hardware Acceleration isn't available as a setting in SU2017.
What graphics card are you using?

I'm using NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB

Are the drivers up to date?

yep all up to date OS X el capitan 10.11.6
