CLEANING UP MY GLITCHY SKETCHUP 2017

Hi Guys,

Decided to clean up some of my plugins as have been having lots of performance glitches with sketchup 2017 for a long time, I am at the end of a contract and have removed a lot of incompatible plugins and things which I believed were causing problems.

I just restarted sketchup and got this message about v-ray. any ideas how to fix this issue. I have looked in application support for rogue files. pray not showing in my sketchup extensions so don't really know what to do. any help appreciated.

The file in your Plugins folder, named vfs.rb, is trying to load a file which you must have moved or deleted [path given in the third line of the error report] ?

I thought i was being clever removing V-Ray as I'm pretty sure that was the cause of all the problems I was having.

Anyway I decided to cut my losses and totally uninstall and re-install sketchup. Followed all the instructions as per the sketchup website.

on opening the new install of sketchup, still got the error message as above but weirdly also had scatter and podium still showing in the plugins dropdown. I thought by uninstalling it would remove everything and i can just start again with a fresh copy. what should I do? any ideas.

Uninstalling SketchUp is unlikely to remove non-shipped extensions from your Plugins folder.
So preexisting one will still be found when you reinstall and startup SketchUp.

As I previously said, because the Vray loaded RB was still loading it threw an error because it couldn't find its subfolder of files to load...

Thanks again for your reply, Unfortunately I am not computer savvy so I don't understand what you mean. Is there anything I can do to get rid of this pop up message, or should I wait for the 2018 sketchup and fresh install that?

Also is it a warning that I should be worried about? I mean will it affect the performance of sketchup or can I live with it for a few weeks / months until 2018 comes out.

The error message has useful info.
The first line tells you that it's trying to load vfs.rb, and it fails, because that script can't find the files it expects to load, their location is spelled out in the next lines.
The final lines of the error message give the path to the RB which is failing.
I suspect that you have removed the main Vray folder, but left the loader RB behind.
Look in your Plugins folder [the path is shown near the end of the error message] and remove that wayward RB loader...

The vfs.rb file is attempting to load from somewhere.
I don't think the SketchUp Plugins folder path you showed is it ?
See the path in the image and use the Finder to open that folder...
If you read the error message line by line you will see various folder paths are potentially involved,,,

I copied those paths and put them in the finder but nothing came up. I don't know what else there is to do.

As I can't be sure of the exact paths you have tried...

If you use the Finder to search your entire MAC for vfs.rb do you find anything ?
Then again searching for V-Ray... anything ?

TIG's advice is dead-on. I suspect that you are either omitting spaces in one or more items in the path or breaking the path over multiple lines the way it wraps in the error popup. So let's try another one-step-at-a-time route.

In Finder, at the bottom you will see a stripe listing the folders in the current path. The left-most entry will be the base folder of your hard drive (typically named something like Macintosh HD). Double-click that entry to open it in Finder. You will then see a list of contents including a Library folder. Open the Library folder and in it you will see 'Application Support'. Open that and you will see 'SketchUp 2017'. Open that and you will see 'SketchUp'. Open that and you will see 'Plugins'. Open that and you should find the offending vfs.rb. Delete that file and V-ray should stop trying to load.

There is an RB file somewhere trying to load something it can't find...

Let's approach this in another direction...

Open SketchUp.
Open its menu item: Window > Ruby Console.
In the console's bottom field type [or copy+paste] this
$LOAD_PATH
Press enter.

You will now have a list of all of the folder paths which SketchUp auto-loads RB files from...
Go through each in turn, and use the path to open the specified folders.
The list is separated by commas and the paths are inside "" - ignore those when using the path...
Look for the vfs.rb file...
Firstly Look in any specifying a 'Plugins' folder, then 'Tools' folder.
Leave any 'Ruby' based folders until the end, as they are unlikely to be contain it.

Whitelock, sorry to say there are two problems with what you just reported! First, the error message you posted earlier plainly said the folder I told you how to examine is where the offending extension script lives (see the yellow highlights TIG added to your screenshot)! Second, the extensions you show in your screenshot are not placed in that folder, they are in your personal Library (/users/yourname/Library/..., not the system's /Library). I mean no offense, but that sounds like you didn't follow my detailed instructions and are looking in the wrong place.

Thanks again for your patience. I did as you suggested, however I can't see any of the info you said that might be in there. I still copied and pasted the paths into finder and none returned any hits!!

I didn't say to use the Finder.
Use the paths one at a time [without the "" around them] thus:

Thanks again for all your input I was away and couldn't get back to you until now. I worked out what the problem was and found the file with thanks to Tigs instructions. All sorted. I was then able to open sketchup without the pop up window opening.
