      So do you think that writing some decent mapping tools instead of the useless rectangle was impossible. 😐

      I did neither said nor meant this but have referenced to comparing the effort for developing a small improvement of an exiting tool with a complete new functionality by 'derei':

      @derei said:

      Another questionable improvement would be rectangle draw... which whilst "it may" have its usefulness, the impact of having a fancy modifier when drawing a rectangle is rather small, compared with a better uv-mapping, to say so.

      Meanwhile there are tons of plugs free or very inexpensive (Trupaint, SketchUV,Wraper..) which sorted the problem.. Same goes for other ESSENTIALS modeling features sorted by plugins (SubD, Artisan, Vertex Tools, Curviloft, Flowify, Profile Builder, Skatter..).

      because they are free/inexpensive they do not have required a lot of effort to develop?

      sure, ESSENTIALS for you but surely not for the standard non-power user... which are btw often commercial users in comparison to forum regulars demanding to develop a Revit/Rhino/Blender clone, for free of course...

      But we still have to read the same story "easy peasy development" "why no multi-threading" "long overdue" "I will leave the ship" over and over again.

    • RE: SketchUp 2018

      Make users do not have any reason to complain anything concerning the use of a software donated to them for FREE with (unfortunately) nearly the same core feature set of the commercial Pro version!

      As already elaborated above, SU initally was made by @Last primarily for and dedicated to architects, nothing else.

      Comparing SU with Blender shows not being aware of the differences in 3D modeling for construction purposes compared with a modeler for modeling this fancy stuff in the area of Digital Content Creation... sure, both are 3D modelers... and the learning curve of SU is still lightyears flatter than Blender.

      Comparing the effort to enhance the rectangle tool with a full blown U-V mapping in your other concerning post, c'mon, your surely kiddin'

      Question 1. Do you actually use a 4k yourself?

      nope and surely won't because to much strain to the eyes, but click on "etc." above for further info concerning this issue.

      @pmolson said:

      Question 2. Wondering if i run two displays...

      wouldn't recommend multi-monitor setups because regularly difficult with OpenGL-based 3D applications and also may mix up toolbar positions etc. because of negative screen coordinates if e.g. monitor #2 is placed left from the main monitor #1.

      @pmolson said:

      Question 3. Any Idea when sketchup will support 4k displays?

      nope but obviously not before SU v2018 not avail before roughly end of this year... if included.

      in short, don't try this @ home 😉

      As such I am looking for the absolute min config that will run 2017 make. I have been happy with the performance with graphics acceleration turned off in ver 8 thru 2016. However I am having disc errors so computer is no longer reliable.

      swapping the disk maybe replacing by a much nimbler SSD isn't a big thing... but why not simply stick with SU Make 2016?

      neverever, with the the key difference (= DXF/DWG data exchange) between Make and Pro removed and already lots of users using Make commercially this would probably have a big impact on Pro sales... au contraire, strip down or better discontinue the Make version.

      I am using SU 2016 pro...

      for evaluating if the issue is caused by a faulty OpenGL support of the used graphics card driver, disable in SU v2016 "Window > Preferences > OpenGL > Use Hardware Acceleration", close/launch SU and print again.

      If everything fine than the graphics card driver is causing the issue. If the recent driver version doesn't fix the problem, swapping to a recent GeForce GTX 1050Ti/1060 (or better) might be opportune.

      A few days ago I spent $1,400 on design software to replace SU.

      Can you share information concerning this alternative application and the geo location services this product provides.

      @firedean said:

      That feature alone saved me (and countless others) days of field work.

      i.e. SU paied for itself in a very short time.

      @firedean said:

      Many of us have taken a major financial hit as a result of Trimble's failure to address this properly.

      After making lots of money using SU for this purpose over years and with no alternative solution in this price range?

      @firedean said:

      SU's indifference to those losses will cost them in the end.

      Would have probably been dependend on the subscription/traffic fees charged by Google for continuing this service.

      Don't understand me wrong, I understand your point and Trimble should have surely communicated this a little bit earlier not only in a forum post... but if Google doesn't extend agreements concerning this service and with obviously no other provider delivering comparable quality the recent data seems to be the only viable solution and may hopefully develop in the (near) future.

      The tool uses DigitalGlobe imagery and imports a low resolution 'snap-shot' similar to how SketchUp's Add Location tool works. Sorry, terrain import is not available with this tool.

      DG claims at least to "offer the highest quality satellite imagery in the industry" down to a resolution of 25 cm (WorldView-3 sat).

      Trimble should maybe acquire additional satellite imagery sevices from e.g. Planet Labs (formerly Google Terra Bella).

    • RE: SU Pro 2017 and SU Pro 8

      might be an issue with the OpenGL suppor of the used video driver... intel HD/Iris and AMD Radeons are known for this.... update the graphics card driver first and if e.g. a notebook with integrated and dedicated video system ensure that SU is running on the dedicated graphics card (see 3D options of graphics card control panel).

      You also may want to click on the "View Report Details..." of the Bug Splat application for evaluating the exact cause of the problem as e.g. an affected runtime library (DLL) denoted:
