FYI.......Make sure you have the latest driver(s) from 3D Connexion should you want to try out a 3DX Device.......in SU 2015

How does it feel not having a hand at the ready on the keyboard? My left hand hovers over the modifier keys for CAD and SU work, constantly hitting the shift and option or both and numerous 2-3(4) key combinations and sequences--while I work the mouse with the other. I guess you get more freedom with the mouse?
I think it is entirely fair to be concerned about being "off" the keyboard.
I would have to actively "think" about it while I manipulate a model.....to offer any real accurate pro/con.......though I suspect it would be pro navigator as I am so used to it now.
I know I have adapted and often use the mouse hand (rt hand) to select keyboard shortcuts...while orbiting model.....that previously would have been left handed actions. (crossover?)@pbacot said:
Like choosing to edit text, it seems natural you navigate with the (right hand) mouse then click down, select etc. almost in one move. Now it seems you have to coordinate navigating this hand, select with that hand. back to the keyboard, get ready to navigate. Sounds like it could be harder, but everyone says not. (I still want to try one!)
With the new 3DXWare.......they now have something called "Radial Menu"......Krisidious covers some of this in his review.
In short.......the "Radial Menu(s)".....are fully customizable.........and....can be "active" while/during orbit/pan/zoom.....via the buttons on the 3D Connexion device.
(some relief about concerns of left hand off keyboard?)
I find it difficult to really explain.......briefly.........my best advise would be to find and view any and all videos of the 3D Connexion devise you are considering.
And maybe not worry so much about the loss of keboard shortcut (hand off keyboard)....as it seems 3DXWare more or less has you covered.Best,
Charlie

RE: 3 Things SketchUp Users Need to Know When Using a 3D Mouse
juju,
I have 2 wired Navigators....one on desktop & one for laptop. After SU 2015 release I was without both (3DXWare had to catch up w/2015 release)
I mention that......only because it was like I had lost my left hand......having used the Navigator for several years now.
I always keep a previous version of SU installed.....so I simply used SU 2014 Until 3DConnexion updated the 3DXWare.....which.....they did promptly.(2+ weeks or so)
So, if not already obvious..........it is a really great piece of hardware...takes a short learning curve to get accustomed......but once you do.......I highly doubt you will ever go back to scrolling/orbiting w/mouse wheel.
Best,

RE: Layout text opacity.
@craigcampbell66 said:
Hi guys, can anyone tell me if or how you can change the opacity of text from within Layout. I have tried clicking the colour icon and changing opacity and sampling a shape with a fill set to less than 100% opacity etc but no joy. Tried a few different fonts also just in case that was the issue.
thanks in advance.
CraigUnfortunately.......I do not think you can control ANY LO text opacity.
I just (quickly) double checked in LO_V15........and No....not possible. (too bad)Charlie

RE: Measurment text in black area
Just following up........I looked to the Trimble SU........Knowledge center.......(search) HLR.
As I suspected.......the HLR print (output) option is vector based output.
So...somewhere......somehow.....the black dimension boxes are cause/effect of......??
SU dimension text fails to convert/display as vector?
User "success" in printing to HLR (w/o blacked out dimension text) .....most likely does not contain any vector based attributes. (IOW: print driver is really printing as .jpg/or other "image" file)
I do not have an answer/solution.......but to say the HLR print option......when used with a vector capable print driver.......will unfortunately create the blacked out text/dims. as depicted above.

I wonder why I don't have any issue on my machine with this.
Could still be Print Driver........I am using Adobe Acrobat ProXI.
Charlie
So maybe the issue is more with print drivers? I don't have a printer connected to my PC and the default "printer" is set as One Note.
My WAG......Printing w/HLR yields a partially vector based file....no? (lines are vector...& text appears to be raster....to me anyway)
I tested this using windows XPS writer.......which I am pretty sure saves as a .jpg or similar image file. (all raster)
I do not have any other print driver installed to test further.Charlie
PS:
XPS Writer does not black out the text.

I see it in v2015.

Camera set to Parallel Projection....default views (top/front/right..etc) gives expected results.
Perspective views not so much.Charlie

RE: How can I make a rectangle 9/10" across? Rounding problem.
remotely relevant......but....land surveyors routinely use "tenths".
IE: N52Β° 43' 48" E 89.1'
The "length" (ft) is routinely expressed as in above example.(89.1')C

RE: Shapes in LayOut: Combining, Cutting holes, etc.?

In a word.......NOYou can however create linework and fill seperately and later combine them in a group.
(please see attached crude example)So....your request is a good one as this is a limited/cumbersome solution.

RE: Styles rendering too thick in SU 14, work fine in SU 8
Window....preferences....open gl......Untick "use maximum texture size"
You may have to change your style and purge unused....than re-select the style that you were using.

DOH!
Thanks Dave.....silly me....I was still doing the copy/paste in place method just the other day.Charlie

RE: Highlight or zoom-in small parts (like IKEA does...)
Shure would be nice if a clipping mask could have a "stroke" option.
Perhaps I missed that.

RE: Layout Prints White Vertical Lines
An old thread about similar situation.....LO "tiles" the exported pdf.
As Dave says....upgrade to SU2014.... for much faster renders....and I no longer see this in 2014.......at least not yet.

RE: Broken section planes
@keithwins said:
.... Is this common? It doesn't seem to have anything to do with turning section planes or cuts visibility on or off. When they're broken, I can move them and they act just like Section Cuts vis is off.
I have had this happen...though I thought it was related to putting the section plane(s) on a layer.
They will no longer cut....no matter what you try....ative/inactive...put back on default layer."It" hasn't happened to me in a while, and so I never did figure out why.
Can you post a file with a broken section plane? (maybe Trimble would like to see it)

RE: Re-Link Selected Viewport(s) Only
@pbacot said:
Your way seems to be the one way. Even if you have references for both SU files, a viewport only knows about one of those.... An option would need to be added in the SketchUp Model window under View: Source File, where one could choose a different file (already referenced) or browse for a new file.
I like that (Source File Option).....and as you point out....no matter how many models appear in the reference list....individual LO viewports cannot be made "unique" or "in LO file" references exchanged viewport to viewport.....maybe this needs to go into the wish list/feature request thread.
IE: Context click on LO Viewport....dropdown option from "in" file reference files...or add new/browse.

You could explode those viewports that won't get updated later.
Dave,
Thanks.....and that is true.....but I would have to Re-Link first before exploding...but even then....why explode?Guess there isn't any way roght now in LO to do what I ask?
