Hi, I happened to spot this thread and thought that was a pretty cool leg design......so I had to have a go at it.I've been spending some time working with Shape Bender and FreeScale this weekend. I just downloaded them both and I'm having a blast seeing what's possible. I used a combination of follow me and the FreeScale taper tool to model this leg.The taper went smoothly..........I spent more time just getting the pocket for the table apron. Also, this is why often, when doing the"modelling" (building) part of the work, with l;arger models it's better to turn textures off completely. If you are in monochrome model, at least you can see what's front and what's back face. This (and a couple of other tricks like turning off shadows or "hide the rest of the model" while working on a detailed component) can speed up work even with a slower computer.

Welcome Dermot. My only additional advice would be to watch all of the GSU training videos (if you have not already), some of them more than once. http://sketchup.google.com/training/videos.html

Thanks for your responses -- the differences between polygon modeling vs. nurbs explains a lot.

However, my first guess would be the ATI graphics card. Do a test by turning off Hardware Acceleration (Window>Preferences>OpenGL). Its a hit and miss affair to find a graphics driver version that works, but you could try it. At the time, Google is discouraging people from using ATI or Intel graphics solutions on their Hardware requirements page http://sketchup.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=36208&cbid=1tm6vzbb1xjzj&src=cb&lev=index Anssi

No problem. We are all detectives here. SP is not the "easiest" plugin to use but I'm sure you can do whatever you want with it once you get the hang of it. AFAIK it can already do magnetism.

Sure, why not (if I understand well). After all, for the section cuts to get animated, you need to use scenes and certainly nothing stops you to change the camera position as well as active section planes between two, given scenes. See (very basic and primitive) example attached. Section+Camera.skp BTW really cool video!

As I thought and fumed about this, my son suggested it might be a video card problem, so I copied the file to another computer, and problem gone! So thats' it....I guess it also means I need a new laptop. Thanks for your input

All you can do normally is to use the Move and the Rotate tools to get things aligned. Sometimes you need to Scale things to perfectly align endpoint to endpoint of different shapes. Where exactly have you got stuck?
