Creating a half dome?
-
how do you do it

-
Make a full dome and cut it into half.

Now seriously. If you only lathe a shape around a half circle, you will end up with unwanted and weird geometry on both "sides" of your half dome. Therefore this workaround. You can make a dome, can't you? If not, some of the steps (4-7) of this tutorial are about that. I'd suggest however reading the whole tutorial as this is the best tutorial so far at SketchUcation.

That was my initial thought when I read the topic title.

But there IS indeed the reason - it's just a right place to shoot a joke with it.

Hidden geometry will soon (and often) be your friend. I even have a shortcut for it.
