@alz said: In d12dozr's example above, when unfolding and combining the hut to create the UV sheet, you create a copy. This becomes a separate object and doesn't link to the materials on the original. So, the missing step is taking the new UV sheet and re-mapping it to each face of the original hut, correct? (seems kinda obvious, but I wanted to call out this missing bit) In my last post above, I give a link to a tutorial by Colonel Klink where he describes how to link materials to the original component. It works but is labor-intensive and not something you could do on a hi-poly model. Here is the link: http://www.resentmentpublications.com/downloads/SUUVMAP.pdf

I really like this technique. I've done something similar in the past with hand drawn/hand rendered stuff (yikes), but this just inspired me to play around with exported images from SU. very nice!

modeling it will always look better. you only need to texture each 'panel' then and you won't need to make one for that.

Hi, I had a closer look to the imported DXF 3D-Mesh and below the result, it looks nice but useless. Karlheinz [image: AWjt_DXF3D-Mesh.jpg]

In AutoCAD, make sure your trees are "blocks". You should be able to edit one tree in ACAD and see all others change at once. Then, when you import to SketchUp, those blocks become components. If you double-click on a SketchUp component you can add something inside and that object will appear in all instances of the same component. This is what he did.

Below the text area ou type when posting, there are two tabs. One says "Upload attachment". I'm not exactly sure what the issue with the first one is. If you import an image as texture, you should be able to apply it on any face you have in the model. How about uploading the model as well as the texture?

If you have digital info - say in a .csv file - you can use various scripts to manipulate this data into a 'cloud of points', and then 'triangulate' these points into a surface. This surface can be adjusted using the built-in Sandbox Tools. There are further scripts to manipulate the surface - such as 'drape cpoints' - which can then get triangulated back as a gridded mesh rather than a triangulated one and others to simplify, add contour lines etc... You can also make surfaces from 3D contours [Sandbox's add-on 'simplify-contours' will make it less intensive !] etc... To import data from a file as a 'cloud of points' get http://www.crai.archi.fr/RubylibraryDepot/Ruby/em_fil_page.htm [cloud_v6.zip] - it supports various data format - see its pdf help file in the zip... The script 'points_cloud_triangulation.rb' [which shows in the Plugins menu as 'Triangulate Points'] converts cpoints to a faced mesh - it's here... http://www.crai.archi.fr/RubyLibraryDepot/Ruby/points_cloud_triangulation.rb Note that this script also requires 'delauney2.rb' - which you can get from here... http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?p=117071#p117071 'drape_cpoints.rb' makes a surface into a regular meshed set of cpoints that you can reprocess - http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?p=179421#p179421 Hope this kicks you off in the right direction...

Not bad. I can do about anything with 3ds so that's good. That's interesting that it can import RAW format. Any idea what that's for? -Brodie

Use the protractor tool, start it at a face1 edge and make the guide line at 90 degrees. Rotate the second object about this point and snap to the 90 degree guide line...

or you could simply change the axes orientation for that object - unless you expect different texture orientations for each face...

Hmmm, no I didnt, but thats a good idea! I will give it a shot, thanks for the advice. There are a couple of those scale rubies out there for circular shapes I might give one of those a shot. Thanks Honolulu, opened up a whole new thought processes!
