You can also download (and print if you wish) the Quick reference card that lists all the modification keys: http://support.google.com/sketchup/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=116693

You need to lock the inference. Which means you want to keep the octagon orientated to the blue axis. To do that, position the tool so that it inferences to the edge and is blue, then hold shift and move the tool up to the position you want it and click to start the shape and release the shift key and drag the octagon to size. Quicker to make a vid than to try to explain more. In the vid I move around to show the different inference colours, then when down the bottom and blue I hit shift to lock the inference. It doesn't 'stop' at 48. That is as many entires as it can display at that screen resolution. To access something further down the list, with the focus on the list, type in a start value - say 5 and it'll jump down to say 50, now use the up/down arrow keys to scroll through the list... This is a common issue with the 'inputbox'. The only way to get a scrollable list is to use a webdialog of your own devising...

The bronze gear is easier than you think. Make one tooth as a component then create an array of 358 copies. As to to worm , use a helix and follow me, or you might need follow me and keep. But don't be daunted, have a go and ask again if you run into specific problems.

Ah, I see. Sorry but I am a complete idiot when it comes to coding (I can only model what I can see or at least envision).

First example is done by Fredoscale "Box scaling to target". You must do it one side at time. You must make a point to snap to for your one meter measurements in each direction (a meter square on the ground and on perhaps a guide vertically. Since one dimension is .6 to 1.0 and the rest are .9 to 1.0 you have to do each side. For the stairs Fredoscale could make it scale as well. It seems like these scenarios all depend on what the different parts need to do. And so a plugin can't fit to all situations. If I had a steps that needed to be larger, I would not want to change the dimension of the "lumber" parts unless I were accepting the parts would be out of scale, slightly.

If you also type the unit (say 50mm) when entering the value while scaling, it will scale to that size exactly (not 50% or 50x as large).

@tig said: Try running SketchUp as administrator [context-menu option on its selected icon]. This one off might then update the references/licensing etc ? Thanks TIG for the suggestion. Didn't work. I am going to follow Dave's advice and not worry about it. Thanks to all for your help. Close this please. Ken

Today I found some time to try sketchy edges on other systems, and this is the result : On my main system, a desktop with Nvidia Geforce 6150SE videocard I have Sketchup 8.0.16846 and wine 1.5.24: skechy edges does not work. On a Dell latitude D620 laptop with Ubuntu 12.04, sketchup 8.0.16846 and wine 1.5.25 sketchy edges work perfectly. This gave me some hope, so on my desktop, I upgraded wine to 1.5.25 to see what happened.... unfortunately I still have no sketchy edges. As a last test I took a Dell latitude D630 with fedora 18, sketchup 8.0.16846 and wine 1.2.24 : no sketchy edges either, after upgrading to wine 1.5.25 still no sketchy edges... So it seems that the problem is not only related to Sketchup and Wine, both my fedoras, on very different hardware seem to have the problem while ubuntu, on similar hardware as Fedora18 seems to work fine. Anyway, the sketchy edges are not a terrible issue for me, and whenever I need them, I can go back to my ubuntu laptop.... Geert

No other plugins. LightUp is the first that I installed. Re the floor. Remember these "renders" that I do are for events. Once I export the 2D image to Photoshop, I still have to add gobo lighting to the floor, and possible other custom elements that are either composited in, or which I will hopefully be able to draw as components myself in the future, if I ever get that good. I can't just add something that is not there because it looks better in the render. Not that you have the time, but if you look at the website named on the pic I sent you via Yousendit you will get a better idea I think of what I am up against. So it might look plain and featureless in it's initial stages, (this was actually a pretty simple event, only one of three for the same company on that day) but still gets worked up a lot more on leaving SU. In addition, my boss (who also happens to be my nephew) is very particular about his clients seeing only exactlywhat they are getting, so that there is no "But it did not look like this in the render?" later on down the road. So far and using just Photoshop in the past, the comparison between the finished event and the render have been spot on visually but not as dramatic as the finished event with the lighting. There is a lot of lighting done at these events. The bland floor above was a day thing. That circular wall in the back though is glass, and after leaving SU there is another light reflection plug-in that I use in PS that would have added the light and shadows coming from that wall of glass and cast the pattern on the floor. My images don't end with SU. The vast majority of events are done at night, indoors and outdoors and lighting plays a very big part. A lot of gobos, patterns, company logos, etc. Take a peek at the website, if nothing else I think you will find it entertaining. Adam, I really love LightUp - seriously, when I do get it to work on my quick smaller models as mentioned, it is AMAZING, and this is why I am so desperate to find out what's wrong, what I am doing wrong, put an end to the crashing and finally stop annoying you with my constant whining. Attached is an image that was done totally in Photoshop before I started trying SU, and how much cooler would it have been had I been able to do it in SU, use LightUp to add some realistic lighting (this is most certainly not) and render it out. The clients don't really care about scale, these are not buildings where accurate size is imperative. It is more about visual impact and the ad nauseum overstated WOW factor. LightUp can help me provide this. I feel badly about all this yakkity yak, but maybe my issue can help someone else at some point. [image: wm7Q_GDP.jpg]

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll try to find a plug-in that does what you recommend. I've been trying to insert small planes into a bunch of 4 or 5 bricks at a time, trying to make it intersect with that group, and repeat the process so I can negotiate all the planar tilts. I don't have anywhere near the skill set yet, if ever, to create a contour blanket that parallels the whole form uniting them in one shot. Thanks again for your help! Best Regards! p
