      Hi,

When I change styles, there are a lot of styles where no edges appear at all. I have the impression that this is always the case when the edges are represented by raster imagas (for example, in none of the sketchy styles) the edges show up on my screen.

I hope this subject does not exist yet on this forum, but being new to the forum, I could not find a way to do a search on the topics.....

by the way, I am running sketchup 8 through WINE on a linux machine.....

If you are using sketchy types of styles, it is possible that at least some lines won't show on screen. This would happen if the edges in the model are displayed shorter than the shortest lines in the sketchy style. You may notice if you zoom in the edges start to appear as they get longer on the screen. You'll also notice if you make an image export at larger sizes, that you'll get some or all of the shorter lines showing.

The shortest lines you can have in a sketchy style are 16 pixels long. If a line would be displayed less than 16 pixels long on screen or in am image export, they just won't be shown.

        Here's an example:

        My default style
        default.png

Same view with one of my sketchy line styles. Screen shot.
        inking screen.png

View above exported at 3000 pixels wide.
        inking3k.png

Zoomed in close so line segments are longer on the screen, same sketchy style. Screen shot.
        inking close.png

View from above exported at 3000 pixels wide.

          Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply, however, I don't think it has to do with the line size. Edges not visible means no edges at all, neither small nor long ones.

As an example one of the sketchup tutorials in default style :
          My default style
          using my default style
          Skechy crayon style
          using the sketchy crayon style

I added the dimension to show that it seems only to happen with raster img. edges.

            Hi Geert,

Could you also attach the skp file itself?

            Gai...

Post the SKP as Gai asked and make sure it includes the sketchy crayon style.

Or did you do something goofy like turn off the edges or adjust the "Level of detail" slider way over to the left?

                Gai, Dave,

Here we are, the file tutorial.skp attached. There's a couple of styles included in the model. All the ones that do not have "sketchy" in their description work well on my system. All the ones with "sketchy" in the description have completely invisible edges.

Dave, I checked the edge setting within styles as you suggested, and the setting is exactly as in your first example : the edge box is ticked and the detail slider almost completely to the right.

I repeat what I mentioned in my first post: I am on a linux system running skype through wine. Don't know if this could be the reason or not (though I hope it isn't.... sketchup is otherwise working pretty good on that configuration)

Here are screen shots from your file. It looks like it must either be a graphics thing or an issue with Linux/WINE. Not being familiar enough with Linux and WINE, I don't know what the fix is.

                    Dave,

Thanks for the screenshots.... as you mention, this shows it is not a sketchup issue, but rather something with my graphics config. or wine configuration.

                    Thanks for your support.

                      Good luck getting it sorted.

                        Hi,
You are using a system that is not officially supported by Boulder/SketchUp team. Don't expect them to throw gifts at you. We would better go forking SketchUp and building a program that is really open to everyone.

What you see is very likely not a pure graphics card issue (the drivers are quite sufficient with SketchUp's humble requirements. I use a graphics chip that some here call the worst ever, but I get excellent graphics.).

Sketchy edges in SketchUp are rendered using software rendering, on top of the model. The model is usually rendered with hardware acceleration (especially in Wine where this is the only option). Software rendering is a bigger challenge for Wine because it requires libraries that match those of Windows. However they only very recently implemented those in Wine 1.5.04 (but strange that I still only get sketchy edges in some versions of SketchUp).
You should try to add the latest development channel to your software updates.

                          Hi Aerilius,

This sounds hopeful.... you say the libs have been implemented as of wine 1.5.04. Currently I am on 1.5.24, so this should be ok (unless those libs have to be installed separately, which I did not do ???).

You also mention that you get sketchy edges depending on the sketchup version. Which version did you use for the screenshot ? I am using 8.0.16846 right now.

I also had for some time sketchy edges in 8.0.16846 (and 7 etc.) but at the moment not, I'm not sure what is going on, but this is a part of Wine that is changing much (the DIB engine, you could also try if 2d export works now). The SketchUp version in the screenshot unfortunately isn't anymore available.

Today I found some time to try sketchy edges on other systems, and this is the result :

On my main system, a desktop with Nvidia Geforce 6150SE videocard I have Sketchup 8.0.16846 and wine 1.5.24: skechy edges does not work.

On a Dell latitude D620 laptop with Ubuntu 12.04, sketchup 8.0.16846 and wine 1.5.25 sketchy edges work perfectly.

This gave me some hope, so on my desktop, I upgraded wine to 1.5.25 to see what happened.... unfortunately I still have no sketchy edges.

As a last test I took a Dell latitude D630 with fedora 18, sketchup 8.0.16846 and wine 1.2.24 : no sketchy edges either, after upgrading to wine 1.5.25 still no sketchy edges...

So it seems that the problem is not only related to Sketchup and Wine, both my fedoras, on very different hardware seem to have the problem while ubuntu, on similar hardware as Fedora18 seems to work fine.

Anyway, the sketchy edges are not a terrible issue for me, and whenever I need them, I can go back to my ubuntu laptop....
