Is there a limit on how big SU can export (on any computer) then? Because surely as a 32 bit app it can only address a small bit of memory?

Thanks Alan. I was trying to edit the component in its base file. When I insert the component into a new file, explode it, and resave it from the component browser I'm able to turn on the face-me features. It seems like there are some added steps there that slow down the workflow, but I'll live with it. Thanks again for the explanation. Wyatt

In fact I have to confess that I have never designed a log building except our first assignment at architecture school that was to design a small log sauna in full detail (still sweating after about 35 years). But as most of my work involves old (in the Finnish context)buildings I have to keep up some understanding of traditional building methods. As Gaieus correctly points out, most domestic building here was in logs until the 1940s, and in the earlier days also most public construction too. I am not sure if the Kerimäki church from the mid-1800s is still the largest log building in the world. The kind of log construction using round logs is traditionally not very common here, except in outhouses and temporary buildings. Permanent buildings were made of hewn logs and boarded over. In modern times the "chalet" style has become more popular, first in summer cottages, later it has been the preferred style of the log house prefabricators. Anssi

By the way Conrad, you may want to now go to the Edit tab to experiment with profile settings of 1, 2, or 3 to change the thickness of the outline lines.

You need to do more than just select the edge. The softening effect is a combination of both the edge and an adjacent face. So long as you select edges and at least one adjacent face for each edge, you should be able to simply turn down the smoothing slider to unsoften them.

Generally SU doesnt do faces smaller than about 1mm, although you can easily work around this if you want to do small things, by creating your model at 10,000x the scale and then scaling it down.

I havent had this with the stamp tool before, but i have had problems with grouping/ungrouping subsmoothed geometry. No idea why it does it Not sure why softening the edges is causing the model to lose its colour either, it stays put in my little experimets.

Have you ever tried to uninstall and clean all files dedicated to SU and reinstall? Also if you are not using the latest version, maybe updating helps. If you can not fix it, go on windows version.

and if all that doesn't help, you may be in the "wireframe" face style mode. then you just have to change to one of the other modes (shaded for example) and you will see all the faces again. this sounds far too simple. but it happens quite often...

cmead, This subforum is for sharing components not for talking about styles. You have already asked for a da Vinci style and never visited that thread back: http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=10135 also, please, avoid double posting all over the places, see topic: http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=10165

lol thanks.. but im not asking you to do so - this aspect of the unit isn't significant. It's only for this unit in which im designing a nightclub, that our teacher wants us to implement different drawing views throughout our folio- it's not like the main presentation or anything.

pretty new to these forums, but have been using sketchup pretty regularly for the last few years. I am in the videogame/film/tv industry and have found sketchup to be heavily used in the design process. It's a similar industry to architecture, considering the needs for conceptual, photoreal designs. I have been waiting for sketchup to take the next step in terms of modelling and am hopeful that 7 will address some of the issues. I hope Google understands the widespread use of Sketchup in diverse industries. If in the next update there is little to address the need for better modelling, and maybe even more extensive lighting options (like the light up plugin) i think i'll have to bite the bullet and learn modo...ouch. I hope not because i love sketchup and am heavily invested in it. just my two cents. i love this board by the way, have learned an amazing amount and am constantly inpressed with the quality of the work displayed!
