@remus said: xbjllb, the bug we're talking about is when you have a camera position mid animation that passes through shadows. It messes them up, to put it bluntly. What your describing sounds somewhat different. Though his solution could have some merit!!!

Hi Susan, hi folks. Dont forget that you can Orbit, pan and zoom in the middle of a dimensionning operation to force SU to use a plane instead of another. See this SU file for ideas. Dimensions positionning.skp

More labour intensive, but this will work too. Go to the Ruby section and download Didier's Divide script Draw your arc with the arc tool, and then divide it into the require number of segments. Didier's script will place construction points (cpoints) at the dividing points. You can also specify the number of segments making up the arc after selecting the tool and before drawing the arc (check out Help). Place a construction point at the insertion point for your column a then make the column and its cpoint a component. Use the move + copy option to snap your column to the cpoints on the arc. Delete the cpoints.

@watkins said: Many thanks for taking the time to put it together. I'm glad to hear the instructions were sufficiently clear (the second time around) @watkins said: ...it never crossed my mind to use a texture to create geometry on a curved surface... I refined the process while producing geometry on troublesome curved aircraft surfaces (my X-15 rocket planes in the 3D Warehouse.) Most geometry could be produced with (faster) intersections, as first attempted by theolwakachangchang, but sometimes a new approach must be devised. Regards, Taff

I like to use the arc, freehand, and line commands for tracing things! This works real well when you need to do a company logo but you don't the text they used to create it!

If you have a very large plane underneath the piece your trying to push/pull it can sometimes seem like its stuck, as its inferring the ground plane. If you move to a view very close to the ground plane you can often solve the problem (as you can see above the ground plane and thus infer above it.) Might be something entirely different though...

There is a Toggle section planes button in the toolbar which "hides" the section planes (see image). Also available menu iten in the View menu. If you have made a component of the geometry and the section planes, it should appear in your component browser. From there you can insert as many instances as you like as well as you can copy it with the Ctrl+Move tool. [image: FT5i_TnT_4_001.jpg]

I think the easiest way to fix that at the moment is to buy a new computer honestly, I think we can hope for improvement of the algorythms. but such graphic intensive features will always slow down SketchUp...

So far it looks that only some users with nVidia graphics cards gets the best results. I got an ATI Radeon 9800 on my Ubuntu box and as with the rest of the ATI users SU on Wine is no go. I have an 8800GT and 6800GT on my main rig, but I only run Vista on that.

Thank you. That seeems to be it. So that can be done. Oddly: I made the other layer visible and saw the lines. I then made it invisible again and lines were now there on the same layer as the surfaces. Hmmm.

I haven't read all the posts in the other thread, but I'd recommend the component approach. Just break your model into components and then save each component out to its own file. Then you can work on the individual files, and update them back into main model later on. This also allows for alternative versions of specific elements since you can have multiple files for any component. Then on top of this if smaller files are slow follow guidelines by others about having shadows off, not show textures, outliner closed, etc.

@enrique said: ........also on the user cordinate system and how it relates to the world coordinates and can i revert to a ucs or the wcs or toggle them ?.... Enrique, Say you save the default SU axes setup in Scene1 You can now translate and/or rotate the axes as an orthogonal set to a new origin/direction. Save this in Scene2 You will now be able to toggle between the two systems. Also moving objects absolutely by using [x,y,z] is related to the current UCS, not to the WCS where SU starts from. Unless it is the current one. So moving a selection by clicking on a point A to start from to [3m,5m,7m] will place point A (taking the selection with it) in x=3m,y=5m,z=7m of any rotated/translated current orthogonal system. The same applies to relative movements: <2m,7m,3.25m> A2 is relative to A1 by x=2m,y=7m,z=3.25m measured along the current axes It works in SU7 and SU6. Wo3Dan
