I haven't read all the posts in the other thread, but I'd recommend the component approach. Just break your model into components and then save each component out to its own file. Then you can work on the individual files, and update them back into main model later on. This also allows for alternative versions of specific elements since you can have multiple files for any component. Then on top of this if smaller files are slow follow guidelines by others about having shadows off, not show textures, outliner closed, etc.

@enrique said: ........also on the user cordinate system and how it relates to the world coordinates and can i revert to a ucs or the wcs or toggle them ?.... Enrique, Say you save the default SU axes setup in Scene1 You can now translate and/or rotate the axes as an orthogonal set to a new origin/direction. Save this in Scene2 You will now be able to toggle between the two systems. Also moving objects absolutely by using [x,y,z] is related to the current UCS, not to the WCS where SU starts from. Unless it is the current one. So moving a selection by clicking on a point A to start from to [3m,5m,7m] will place point A (taking the selection with it) in x=3m,y=5m,z=7m of any rotated/translated current orthogonal system. The same applies to relative movements: <2m,7m,3.25m> A2 is relative to A1 by x=2m,y=7m,z=3.25m measured along the current axes It works in SU7 and SU6. Wo3Dan

Another way to sort the textures out natively is to turn on hidden geometry (view->hidden geometry) then sample the texture on the main face and paint it on to every other face. Probably a lot easier to use the UV plugin for anything with lots of faces though, as painting every face can get a bit boring.

I would also like to see the "view cube tool" in the top right corner of the screen. makes navigating easier than it currently is with SketchUp's standart views. great idea about the "no clipping" mode. so the Mighty Animation Tool would automatically alter the camera path in order not to get too close to surfaces within the view window.

If the Mac can do it (which I now kind of remember),you will need to export your animation as a series of png (or tiff) files which support transparency rather than a *.mov file and use the images in your flash app. Still I'm not sure it could be done with an animation even on the Mac but good luck!

Thanks so much for the replies. Guidelines are perfect, I use them in my CAD package all the time. What a great feature. I'll try all this, and especially get a lot more experienced with components, groups and layers. Keith

Does this help? I have only modelled the basic blade and twist. You now need to model the leading section so that the cutting edge is sharp. You will find skin.rb on this site under the Ruby section, although it is not really needed for this model. The final twist has been smoothed, so select hidden geometry to see the construction. Kind regards, Bob Auger model.skp

you have my vote for that. great idea! (I never understood what these problems are and if they are caused by sloppy modelling)

Nice one guys, thanks for the input. My problem is that I just don't have the time to learn it at the moment. I'm sure they could look really very good in SU, and it's my artistic skills that let me down in Freehand. However, for the moment I will stick with Freehand but I definitely want to learn SU. It would certainly come in handy in the future (when I have more time on my hands). Thanks Again!

Interesting about the directory. Basically it's an animation that may very well be used promotionally to show off the architects design via his website. I would think that would make a good enough candidate to get ahold of ol' Neil and maybe spot him a couple bucks. Anyone got his number? I seem to have lost it somehow. Seriously though, anyone have any idea on how to actually go about paying the royalties then or perhaps to get my paws on this directory? If I find out I'll report back but if anyone has any clues or links they're appreciated. -Brodie PS. too bad about that lady w/ the kid on youtube. too bad she got off scott-free that is. Posting videos of your kids on youtube should be a felony under the People's Right to Not Make me Gag Act 1997 established by the quasi-famous Gray vs. America's Funniest Home Videos case.
