Well I think this reflects real life photography as well. On bright sunny days, the exposure outside will be a lot brighter than inside (assuming no major sunlamps inside). The range of exposure for a camera (aka rendering) is a lot lower than the human eye. So if I were sitting outside the window looking in I would personally see something similar to Picture 2. But if I were to take a photograph of it, it would probably look more like Picture 3.

tisk tisk tisk. I'd rather pay for 2.0 in 2015 than use bootleg 1.49.02. God 1.49 version was the pits...

Hi again! As a mac user I`d like to know how to resize the nodes (like "endpoint", "midpoint",etc) because they all are pretty tiny and it i difficult to see whileI work on SU. Thanks in advance. PD How can I post a new subject on the forum?

Default GI presets have changed in different versions since version 1.x up to now.
Add a V-Ray plane under chairs
In environment tab,in front of "GI", check that if the "m" is "M" then it has a "Sky map" that is called "Tex_Sky", set it to none, so that , you see the "m" sign ( not capital M).
    render again
Aside of these , if you are going to save a huge time in learning , you may find my ebook, as a handy tool.

If you are using single plane glass, just make a material that has just a reflection layer and not refraction layer. I think what you read meant to set the refraction IOR to 1.0, which is basically the same has not having one at all. In the reflection layer, I use Fresnel IOR set to 1.4 and edit the Fresnel to not use pure and white black. Adjust them just a little up and down.

The video is using V-Ray 1.49. 2.0 works a little differently and needs the Diffuse map to pull UVW information from the geometry.

Those materials are definitely not very recent. We changed the extension of our material format to .vrmat sometime in the past year or two. We changed from a binary to xml based format about 4 years ago also, which caused some compatibility issues. There were huge archives of user made materials being passed around, before our own material library grew to the size it is today, it's possible that these older materials are from before our switch to xml.

    Hi,
I'm having trouble with the materials I've downloaded from your website.
When applied to geometry they display black and all the texture seems to be pointing to "C:\Users\fpedrogo\Documents\V-Ray Materials"

Plus where can you download VRay express for SU?

    Thanks
    Carlo

and what about the Studio-Roosegaarde-Solar-Bike-Path-Van-Gog image? How is that made in vray? too many lights?

That should be pretty simple to do with an emmissive material. Once you have an image of the pattern, just stick it in an emmissive layer. Make sure anything that's not lit is pure black, or else you may end up with some undesired glow. (you could mask the emmissive layer to make sure that doesn't happen.)

some very old vismats might not have the texture in the diffuse slot. I recall issues like that going from 1.0 to 1.5. Make sure the vismats you are using are more current (If they are that old, then you may be better off re-building the material from scratch with the maps that are provided)

It took all of us a long time of reading and playing to figure them all out. Once you understand, it will be like a whole new world. Here are some resources.

Make sure all installations of V-Ray for SketchUp are using the same version, including DR Spawners that you installed to render nodes.

Animating with a simple Sketchup animation and then pausing for a detailed rendered view of the building

I prefer when this method is used to show off detail. I also like the break in the animation that it provides. I often get dizzy watching video that is perpetually moving. The break helps to punctuate, break the monotony and prepare the pallet for the next moving scene.

I would export a low res draft version before running a final, but no, there is no way to preview a VRay animation in SketchUp.

I just don't get why people use refraction on window glass? Maybe someone can school me on it. I prefer to use thin cheat glass- single pane, just reflection with 100% transparent black or a little less if you want coloration. Refraction seems like something you really only need when rendering, let's say, a glass vase or something like that, no?

nope, not available yet. Not sure if it ever will be either, because a vrmesh could come from any product, and could have a poly count beyond what SketchUp can handle.

On the Rhino forum there's a file you can run called Holomark2 that spits out a data sheet when it's complete showing all of the components of your computer and how well they performed with a total score at the top. Real useful. It's Rhino specific, not V-Ray specific but it nonetheless provides real valuable information. Would be great to have something like that here.

Encouraged me to think my next computer is going to be a i7-4790 w/ a GTX-970
