I too began to study Modo last year for the similar purposes, but have stopped in the absence of the translator, I wait till now... Developers have made the good import-export translator for Rhino, can try through it? From it like easier to send in SU?

i tried out the things that u guys advised.....however i'm still not very clear about the whole thing....i am uploading the rendered images....u guys should be able to point out the mistakes i've made... the background image is of a city skyline bt all we can see is the sky and not the city... guys... please help...and how do you control the light quality...i jst cnt seem to gt the image proportions right....if u notice ..the background image and the models dont look part of the same environment.. why is that happening?? the images are low resolution...and the renderings aren't very good but you'll have to excuse me ....i've just started learning it and i really need some help... You could try this. The diffuse image was taken from this site : http://www.kavewall.com/fire-smoke/index.htm I just cropped the image and made a clip map out of it. Hope this helps. Material file. [image: TLWp_flame.jpg]

Oh, the atmosphere thingy is good. A job well done. Thing with Maxwell is that it's buggy, too buggy for it's price. And bugs don't exactly get squashed swiftly, either. If I had known this beforehand, I may have gone with Fry. That's not to say Maxwell is bad, though. When it delivers, it delivers quality. But those bugs ... And the Studio ... I dare anyone to spend a day 'planting' high poly trees (while using cautious settings to not strain the app!) and count the amount of crashes they get. I once had over 60. Thing is, of course, that the ability to populate a scene with trees and what not is, at least partially, wherein Maxwell's appeal to us 'poly limited' folks lies ...

...I'm not the expert here but the answer is YES....however with a specific geometric rock face like that, I would be inclined to model it rough in SKP and use the photography as alpha/bump maps, in short, creating the specific terrain in SKP and using VUE to populate it with green stuff. Vue isn't good for modeling...but I'd love to hear how someone would approach it from that direction.

Yes, it's unfortunate, but it does make sense. The free version of SketchUp is so powerful that there needs to be some way to distinguish the pro version from the free version or nobody would drop 500 clams for the pro version. For a more in-depth look at the difference between the free version and the pro versions of SketchUp, see the link below: http://www.suwiki.org/suwiki/index.php?title=The_Differences_Between_SketchUp_Pro_and_Google_SketchUp -abe.

@unknownuser said: Krisu, MAT files are for MAX Vray. There is a converter but you will need 3DMAX to convert those files and it is really not a smooth process. Your best bet is to use .vismat files that are made for Vray for Sketchup. There are many available in the downloads section at the Vray site. Your can also download the material editor and make your own which is truly the best option. This way you have full control over the materials you are using not to mention they will be custom materials that you created so your renders will have that custom look. Good luck. Scott Thanks for the info. I am a bit unsure about purchasing Vray as there are free renderers out there like indigo (too slow on my duo core lappy) now... It is a lot of money and I am right now a student so I can't afford it. I bought a license for Podium but don't really like it as much as Vray that I used from my office. What am I supposed to do? There isn't a Educational copy of Vray for SU is there?

Craig, thanks for replying. I've downloaded the latest version via the link you gave but still the same problem. I've posted it to your forum. I did find that if I temporarily moved all my plug ins out it did install so there must be a conflict with other plug ins. This issue has been reported on your forum which the new version was intended to fix. One thing however, what is the new version number? I still get VE-Ware59 as the installer the same as before.
