Vray for Sketchup - Problems with materials
-
Hi good folks! Not sure if this is the correct forum or not, but I'm trying out Vray for Sketchup and I can't help to notice that is seems as though Sketchup's materials and Vray's materials are complete separated? When I apply a Vray-material to a sketchup-model, it doesn't show in Sketchup. Only when I render, which makes it a bit hard to tell what's actually going on without having to render everything.
Now, I also noticed that, once I've applied a Vray material to a section of a model, then I can't seam to get it off. I've tried to select "apply material" and select "none", but it doesn't do anything. Also, I've tried to use a Vray glass material on a portion of the model, a clean straight face actually. But it doesn't look like glass at all, it's completely distorted reflections from the back side and when it looks as though the backside of the face is completely black! Why?
This is a single faced wall, no thickness on the wall at all. So the material should be applied to the both sides right? -
Kenny,
What version of Vray for Sketchup are you using? Make sure you have updated to the newest release since materials are handled completely differently than before. That being said you will still not see the actual vray material in Sketchup you will only see a solid color. A bit frustrating but you become used to it. I typically render a bunch of times (at low settings) prior to a final pass anyways to get materials and lighting where I want it. With the new release all Sketchup materials are automatically linked in Vray. This is much easier than before when you had to link them yourself.
As far as the glass issue there are a couple things to keep in mind. First use the glass I attached for your glass. It will work for 99% of all clear architectural glass and renders fairly quickly. The distortion you are seeing is due to the refraction setting. if you want it to be without distortion (even though that is true to life) then take the setting from 1.55 to 1.05 or even 1. That will eliminate the distortion you are seeing.
Also visit the Vray forums. They are a great place to get good info and you will typically get answers really quick to your questions.
The biggest advice is to upgrade to the newest release and print the manual. The manual is a bit dry and lacking in spots but covers materials and material settings pretty good.
Hope this helps.

It is a free upgrade if you purchased Vray for SU. It is a very stable release with great changes to the materials and how they are handled.

Krisu,
MAT files are for MAX Vray. There is a converter but you will need 3DMAX to convert those files and it is really not a smooth process. Your best bet is to use .vismat files that are made for Vray for Sketchup. There are many available in the downloads section at the Vray site. Your can also download the material editor and make your own which is truly the best option. This way you have full control over the materials you are using not to mention they will be custom materials that you created so your renders will have that custom look. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I am a bit unsure about purchasing Vray as there are free renderers out there like indigo (too slow on my duo core lappy) now... It is a lot of money and I am right now a student so I can't afford it. I bought a license for Podium but don't really like it as much as Vray that I used from my office. What am I supposed to do? There isn't a Educational copy of Vray for SU is there?
