@unknownuser said: I have a problem: when importing objects from wings 3d and blender that are exported in 3ds form, they show up incomplete! sometimes i get a simple fragment, and others, it looks like a machine gun bearing nut blasted it to bits. It has holes everywhere! Help Please! Possibly the models you are importing consist of very small surfaces. SU cannot fill faces that are smaller than about 1 mm square. You could try importing the model at a larger scale unit(like Centimeters instead of Millimeters or Feet instead of Inches) and then scaling the model down once in SU. Anssi

  • Does SU import "3D faces"?

"3dFace" is the autocad (and others) name for the entity described below. If you are talking about "3d" and "faces" in general, then the below is too specific. In my experience, a dxf 3d face (3-4 sides) is a closed polyline that imports as a SU surface. I think that even in the case when the 3d face's polyline is not closed, SU's import function will close it. Every 3d face consist of a polyline, but polylines are not necessarily 3d faces.

Hello and welcome. Although SU has only limited capabilities with texture positioning, you can still achieve some good results. Here is "all" the SU Guide tells us about texture positioning (you may be interested in the material somewhere at the bottom where it writes about wrapping and projecting). Note that SU will always allow to access the texture tools in the right click menu only on a single face so if you are working with curved surfaces, you may first turn on hidden geometry (View menu) to get a single facet or use a "dummy" plane that you apply the texture to and position it on and then sample it and apply it on the curved surface. See an example here. Pilou beat me - that's the projection method in Aidan's video. My example above is a wrapping method. Basically these two exist in SU.

Hi RT, Have a look at this tutorial on creating the 3D walls of a house. It should be similar with a basement as well (although of course, there can be several other ways, too). As for the stairs, I'd draw one and Copy/Move it several times in a given (slanting) direction in a way described about 2/3 way down (look for "Linear array") on this page.

Hi Nebraska, Like Cris says, there's no "naive" command to create a curve from a set of individual edges. There's a plugin however that is so essential that almost everyone has it and many of us often forget that it's not there "by default": Weld.rb. For an animation plugin like FlightPath.rb it is also needed since you need to have a single path for your camera places.

There is also pipealongpath.rb and another tubealongpath.rb (also posted somewhere int he ruby forum section). Those are both useful, Chris

Also, within that link from equadorian there is another moethod described for doing this. It is VERY useful, especially if you want more than 2 colors, or don't want hundreds of materials added to your material browser. The specific post is here: http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=180&t=16660&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=15#p131738 Chris

As I said, someone will reply soon! Al, I left off something: after constructing the internal arc,you select the "fillet" and drive it using the follow me tool. Remus knows that you will get a cleaner result by his method. You may have to do some cleanup with the other methods. I just assumed that you wanted to work with the model you had already developed. mitcorb

A video card (which supports OpenGL - a technique SU uses to display 3d) has a software called video driver (this will "run" it on you computer). This should be updated as I suspect that your Vista OS needs a different driver for the same video card from what XP needed. At those OpenGL settings you tell SU to exploit all the powers of your video card (use HW acceleration) or not (disable it). If you don't use all powers, SU may become slower. It's not always a big deal however (I have done considerable work on two computers whose video cards didn't have OpenGL support at all) but the one I'm using now has a nice card with an appropriate driver and I can indeed feel the difference.

If you select the dimension tool then select the whole line you wish to dimension until its highlighted Blue. then drag the dimension line out parallel along the face or axis you wish to display it on and then click at the final position.

Yes, broomstick,,, I learned that hard way that the "hand" had to be somewhere on the "drawing object" to move it around. Not on the drawing plane....... Even now sometimes I forget and try to move the object by clicking on the drawing surface,,, then I get to old "beach ball" and I get to grin at myself.... See ya,,,,,,,,

Oh, I see it now. just turn on all layers to see the faces. I think you should be able to make it work by using some careful intersect with model on the meshes. Might have to explode them first. And carefully go through and delete the unwanted geometry. And again, booltools might be helpful here. I have not used it to know its strengths and weaknesses though. Chris
